I am a teacher and currently teach a reception class. The majority of children learn to read between 5-7. My daughter has always been an absolute bookworm and was able to read consonant-vowel-cononant words at 2 and red level school reading books at 3. Now at just turned 6 she reads things like Roald Dahl books. Reading is just her 'thing' and it is unusual to read that early but entirely possible if the child has a natural interest which is nurtured but not pushed. If the interest is not there the child is not ready. I really wouldn't worry at all about reading ability at the age of 5 though, unless the teacher feels there is a problem there, as by year 3 they have all pretty much caught up with each other regardless of when they started to read.
