Hi all,

We were convinced that we were expecting a boy but found out last night, it's a girl! We're absolutely over the moon!! We had firmly decided on Toby for a boy but can't decide on one girl's name.

We seem to like quite traditional names but I also don't want anything too common - we have ruled Olivia out for this reason. I like Amelie and Lily but OH isn't keen. OH also seems to have a problem with names that sound too babyish - I love Poppy, Daisy etc but he says he can't imagine a woman with that kind of name - grrr, how annoying!

Can anyone make any suggestions?

Evelyn - shortened to Evie when she is small

Emyline - shortened to Emmy

Amelia - shortened to Amy

Rose - lengthened to Rosie

I just found this link to a list of the top 100 girls names from a century ago that has some lovely names on it. It might help you find something you both like that sounds grown up when she needs it but can be adapted while she is a baby.

lovely names, can see what your OH means though, a lot of names sound lovely on children but not fully grown adults, love poppy though xx

How about these:

Ruth
Rose
Annie
Heather
Charlotte
Alicia
Lydia
Phoebe
Sophia
Freya

Freya is lovely! This is becoming less unusual too.

I love some of the old school traditional names that are still not too popular.
Evangeline
Elsa
Nancy
Alice
Beatrice
Josephine
Charlotte
Pearl
Aurelia
Agnes
Constance
Clementine
Harriet
Ophelia
Matilda

ooh and Florence is also pretty! There is an interesting list of traditional names from the victorian era here

Have you thought of keeping the name Toby. I went to school with a girl called Toby and am concidering for baby #2. I also have Rory and Renee picked if #2 turns out to be a girl.

Just a thought! Good luck xx

Nothing's grabbed me yet ladies - keep 'em coming!

I think I'll keep Toby for a possible blue baby 2!

Grace gracie for a baby and grace for older, our next baby girl name is going to be emma grace as we've already got a lilly rose. x

Hmmm, I used to have a horse called Gracie (sorry!!) but I love Lily - In fact, Lily May Watson is my favourite. Just need to convince my OH.

We like Liliana, nn Lily for a girl -- perhaps your OH may like that version?

Some additional suggestions:

Emily
Cecelia
Gabrielle
Allison (nn Ally)
Sophia
Felicia
Gianna
Ava
Eva
Kate / Katelyn
Kaelyn
Larissa
Marissa
Chloe
Mia
Marley
Brooke
Bria

Lilly May is beautiful :flower:.

Girls names:

Darcey
Phoebe
Madeleine (Maddie)
Lola
Ruby
Scarlett
Evie
Liliana
Molly
Millie
Sofia
Amelie
Ella

I was just going to ask if you had thought of Darcy! I think it's similar to Daisy but a bit more grown up for when she is older.

I've got the exact same spec as you! My OH poo-pooed Lilly too :dohh: I love:
Amelia (perhaps Mia for short)
Eleanor (Ellie for short)
Nicole
Grace
Kathryn
Maria
Hollie
May
Chloe
Jessica (although it seems this is getting very popular)

However OH prefers a name like Lisa or Emma which are nice but I know so many girls with these names!

Oh, and Evelyn and Amber. None have managed to sway OH or I am in two minds about them but one may float your boat xx

Have you thought about some biblical names?

Hester / Esther
Ruth
Dinah
Leah
Rachel
Deborah
Mary
Judith
Miriam
Abigail
Ava

There's a site here that has a lot of them and I think they are nice no matter what faith you have or don't have.

Cecile and Hermione are nice... perhaps consider some latin or french names for girls, these are often a little more grown up sounding.

A friend of mine has just had a baby girl called Carmen, Freya is also becoming popular and I think is really pretty... I think this is Norse though, not French or Latin.

Saskia
Sasha
Portia
Ella
Laurel

I think we're pretty much decided on Olivia, Liv for short as it's the one name we both keep coming back to. My only concern with it is that there may be lots of other Olivia's in her nursery, school class etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions x
