giving calpol -tips please

Any tips on stopping 4 month baby dribbling calpol out. Using a syringe but LO hardly swallowd any. Even managed to snort some out of his nose. Not sure how much he has had now! He needs it but is determined not to swallow it!!

I have a nightmare giving my son meds and i found the easiest way to get him to take them is to mix with an ounce of boiled water and pop it in a bottle that way they normally take it especially if they are due a feed.

Wish I'd seen this tip earlier I was struggling with my LO and calpol this morning.

I find if i i have her cradled in one arm then syringe some in and then pop her dummy in she sucks and the motion causes her to swallow. I'd say 99% went down as her temp has gone from 38 to 37.2 xx

If you're using a syringe, have you tried putting into his cheek? If you just slip it in the side it should stay in!! That's how neonatal showed us how to give Sophie her foul tasting vitamins and it always seemed to work. We were taught to a skoosh into one cheek then the other then the first cheek again and so on till it was all gone.

We were probably using a spoon for calpol by the time Sophie was your LO's age and we just kind of hold her so her head is a bit back and tip it gently in off the spoon! xx

I use a teat lol. Tip it in and pop in mouth lol

I use a spoon and stick the dummy in straight after I put it in!

Yep - put it in a bottle teat once measured the dose
Otherwise in a syringe down the side of the dummy towards the cheek wall.
If LO doesn't mind the taste, there are dummy medicine givers (think toys r us or mothercare online)

It's yet another activity to add to the 'well I never thought I'd end up doing this' school of thought

I used to use the infacol dropper and just put little bits in at a time.

My LO was severely gagging/vomiting whenever I tried to give her Calpol. I tried using syringe, mixing Calpol with milk, injecting into her cheek...everything, but nothing worked for us. She simply hated the stuff. So I adopted new strategy- I got Paralink suppositories instead! They have the same active ingredient- Paracetamol, and are suited for babies. Instead of struggling with vomiting and wondering how much she has swallowed, I simply insert half a suppository and that's it. It may sound harsh, but believe me I never had any negative reaction from her, she never was aware I inserted anything into her bum. Ever since I tried this for the first time, I never looked back- it works very well for her.

I've tried many ways to get calpol into my lo without much success! On the spoon, syringe, mixed with a little water, mixed with a little juice, I even made a hole in the teat of one of her dummies so she could suck it through (its a Nuby one with a hole at the front). The only way we found that works is to just lay her down on the changing mat, squirt a little bit into her mouth with the syringe and quickly pop her dummy in so that she sucks and swallows....this process can take a while!

Before a feed I just unscrew the teat off her bottle, put it in her mouth and syringe the calpol into the teat, she'll usually take it well as she thinks it's milk, then just quickly put the teat back on the bottle and give her the milk before she screams
