Going Private rather then staying NHS

It is dreadful that we have to fork out so much money but I've found it's not just the waiting lists issue with the NHS - they just treat you as a number and don't want to listen to what you have to say.

My hubby had a surgical sperm retrieval on the NHS due to azoospermia and although they found 'a small number of healthy, mature sperm' they said there weren't enough to freeze under the NHS criteria and just got rid of them

They pretty much said our only options were to adopt or use a sperm donor. Well it turns out that these are not our only options and we are making real progress privately - (helped partly by the fact that they got hubby's blood tests done at the right time of day, unlike the NHS and they show a totally different picture of what's going on) they are so much more prepared to listen to your questions and work WITH you - they are happy that we have been doing our research and understand it all so well rather than looking at us and thinking "obviously another Dr Google here!" like the NHS seem to and appts aren't rushed - our first 30 minute appt with the urologist lasted for an hour and 10 mins!

If we have to pay to get what is so precious to us, then we wouldn't think twice about it, but is it acceptable? Not at all - it's disgraceful! (But I'm trying to channel my anger into research! :winkwink:)

Good luck to you all :hugs: xx

Hi Ladies,

Fortunately we have no need for a fertility clinic but my sister and her fiance have gone private since having no luck with the NHS, I found a group of clinics with locations all over the UK on the net - thought I'd share to see if anything helps you ladies.

The site I found was www.carefertility.com

good luck!!

Thanks for all the info shared in this post, it has been so helpful. I am 26 and I have been ttc#1 for 18months now. I have very irregular periods and cycles, sometimes my cycles last 60-70 days. I never know when I'm going to have a period until I get the usual signs a few days before.

So I have been to the GP and had some tests done at Royal Free Hospital- day 3 blood tests to check hormone levels (fsh,lh, etc.). I have also had a transabdominal ultrasound to see if I have polycystic ovaries. My GP said the results came out normal, and has sent a referral for me to go and see the gynaecologist as the cause of my irregular periods is still not known. I think the next step will be the HyCosy test but I really do not know what to expect. I am waiting for the letter, to know what the next step is.

I have been thinking about going private, as this whole nhs process seems to take forever. Well at least maybe for the next set of diagnostic tests. I am thinking about the costs involved and also the waiting times involved.

Has anybody been through this process? What do you suggest? I would appreciate any feedback. Were you also referred to see a gynaecologist? What did they do and what was the outcome.

Thanks guys, I am new here, maybe you could direct me to a post that has all the relevant info.

MrsOjo - I had to have the Hycosy, I was meant to have it after the ultrasound scan but they found a cyst so it never went any further - I was told it would cause me too much discomfort so never had it in the end. I still want to have it cause I have no idea if my tubes are ok.

I went to my doctor after 9 months of trying to conceive and told them we'd be trying for a year (just so we'd get reffered to the gynaecologist). Then as per normal hospital appointments I had to wait ages for the initial session (where all they did was ask questions about my cycle, hubby, lifestyle) then appt. no 2 was the hycosy. It probably took a further 3 months before it happened though.

there's more topics on Hycosy's through this link at the bottom, hope it helps.

Thanks Tanzibar83, I suspect this will be the case with me too. I have been advised to wait for the nhs instead of spending my money.
