Hi Ladies,

Hope you are all well.

Just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience to me. My daughter was born at 39 weeks, after a PROM, they went at 38+5. When i delivered the placenta the midwife said it was very gritty. So basically not really working at all. Apparently a gritty placenta is a sign of a smoker but i don't smoke so it basically wasn't working towards the end.

Has anyone had this 1st time and with their 2nd labour? I am a bit worried that the same thing will happen again and there might be a problem when baby is born. I am really worried about going over due as my placenta vertually wasn't working at 39 weeks, what if they leave me until 42 weeks before inducing me and the placenta was like my 1st pregnancy and not working at the end?

Thanks ladies

hey hun hmmm i dont no but if you told midwife your worried coz last time it stopped workin wouldnt she induce you early or something? or maybe scan to check placenta?? x

Hey hun, never heard of this before, is your mw aware of this? They might not let you past a certain date if thats the case xxxxx

I had this too. When i was induced (pre e) i had my daughter at 40+4 my notes say Very Gritty. I too was a non smoker. Im not sure my midwife is aware of this so im kinda in the same boat? Its worrying me too.

I did read it can be a build up of something or other, that is found in coca cola and i drank bottles of the stuff? Im currently crazing my midwife though with a whole string of things so id hate to add this to the list though!! lol

No didn't drink Cola, well the odd glass, i was addicted to Lemon and Lime with Extra Lime! lol

I am seeing her on Wednesday so i will mention it. I wonder if my waters went coz of the placenta was about at end of its lifespan!

I don't think a scan would pick it up. I know if i go past 39 weeks i will be freaking out! x

i had my son at 40+5 and a gritty placenta was noted but they said my son was still being fed by it.

I have seen hundreds of gritty placentas in my experience and it certainly isn't a sign that they are not working, at the end of their 9-10mth life span maybe but not a sign of not working. There are other factors too, even second hand smoking, gestational diabetes, medication/drugs etc etc. Certainly it isn't a cause for concern or a reason to induce further pregnancies just having had a gritty placenta at a certain gestation.

:)

a scan will pick it up i just had 1 a few days ago and midwife told me the placenta looks grity, so tell ur mw about ur 1st brith and ask her to have a look on the scan x

The information they would be most concerned with on scan is the umbilical dopplers. On scan having a gritty placenta just tells you its gritty. No action is taken purely for this. The umbilical doppler highlights better placental sufficiency.

My son was born in very similar circumstances: waters started leaking at 38+2, broke almost fully at 38+3, got induced at 38+4 but never dilated beyond 3 cm, at 38+5 my son was born via emergency cesarean weighing 5 p 4 oz and was straight away whisked off to Neonatal Intensive Care where we stayed for over 2 weeks - incubator, tube-feeding n' all.

My placenta was said to be gritty, but we never learned why. I had a small bump all throughout pregnancy, nearly developed gestational diabetes in the end and have low thyroid function as it is, so was getting bigger doses of Thyroxin throughout pregnancy.

Now I'm thinking of having another kid and just like izzysmummy I wonder if I'll go down that road again. I don't know if there's anything I can actually do to make it different this time, apart from making sure I don't stress over... well, anything really. And although NICU wasn't that bad given how there were babies WAY sicker and WAY smaller than my son in there, it really peeves me off when nurses or GPs wonder if my son has to be helped in some way even now, given that he is still very small for his age, and we're talking about 0,2 percentile here. In my head I go back to NICU and see him in the incubator under those blue lights and I just go: "Arrrgh!"

It's almost like I just don't get past that NICU stage with him, whilst, well, he's just small. But somebody's got to be, right?

So I'm wondering and I know that I will never know for sure, just like no-one who's ever had a baby never knew ahead of time. But I still want to know if it'll be the same again =)

With my first it was gritty and thin my DD was diagnosed IUGR at 5lbs 5oz 39w5d and my other two were fine. I had growth scans with them where they checked for cord health. A gritty or calcified cord is common with over due babies and close to due date it can also be common. My first never had any intervention and we went home 48 hrs later.
