Group B Strep.

I had this with my last pregnancy (found on a swab) and didn't have time for the antibiotics (gave birth 20 mins after getting to the hospital) and my little one was fine. The let me go home the same day. I had my booking appt last week and 2 separate midwives told me that these days if it is ONLY found on a swab then you can still give birth where you want and you have the option of if you want to have anti biotics or not. If found in urine then it means it's deeper in your system therefore you need to go to a "big" hospital (rather than home birth or midwife lef unit) and be treated with anti biotics and be monitored after the birth. They said that studies had been done and that when only found on a swab there was no greater risk of the baby having difficulties after birth if the mother had not been treated with anti biotics. If found in urine then the studies showed that babies who's mothers had been given anti biotics suffered less complications. After getting my hopes up by telling me this she then tells me if I'm found to have it again this time even if only on a swab then I have no option and have to go to the "big" hospital as it's reocurring :( I'm not sure if different trusts have different protocols though?

DO NOT GOOGLE :) it will scare the bejesus out of you. There are loads of women who have had it who have perfectly healthy babies :) As others have said, better to know than not know! :hugs:

Im sure I had this in my second son, I ran a high fever in labour and he had a high fever when he was born, he needed treatment with antiobotics but was fine and very healthy other wise.

I have now tested positive before I got pregnant this time, I hope they will test again before labour FX I get that far

I dont want to cause a debate or arguement on here, but you really need to speak with your midwife/hospital and decide with them about antibiotics. Each person and hospital trust is different.

I didnt say anything earlier as I didnt want to scare anyone but in our last pregnancy I had a swab at 18 weeks because of bleeding and was found to be GBS positive. The hospital I was at have the policy that if at ANY point in your pregnancy you have GBS detected you are given at least 1 dose of antibiotics during labour. I had this one dose and because my labour was only 5 hours long from waters breaking I didnt get another, 2 days later my daughter was admitted to Neonatal Intensive care with fitting due to an infection and after numerous tests etc it was put down to septicaemia due to GBS that I had. My daughter is absolutely fine now and developmentally miles ahead of where she should be, but GBS in a baby can lead to meningitis

Have a look at this website https://www.gbss.org.uk/, google is more often than not filled with nonsence and scare mongering. The website is monitored and updated by the GBS support group and medical professionals. It has very good, factual info on it and also a section on what to ask at the hospital and things that should be done.

Once again I dont want to upset or anger someone, but GBS is a very touchy subject now in our family and I dont want anyone else to go through what we did.

Mumtobe, so glad all was ok for you and your baby, Im glad now my son was treated right away other wise he prob would have been very sick.

I will be finding out today if they will do a swab closer to my due date this time.

:hi: girls, I too am GBS positive (found on a swab when I had a bleed early on). I have read the leaflet the midwife gave me and refrained from googling. I will be having the IV antibiotics when labour starts and every 4 hours there-after (depending how long labour lasts), just no question about it! Good luck to everyone xxx

I had GBS with my daughter. I had a planned section booked for 39 weeks. My waters went day before. I was worried sick about it. But was told didnt need antibiotics as was having section. baby was fine though. I did get her checked over on day of delivery
