Ive got my gtt tomorrow and its says no eating or drinking after 10 tonight and that i can only have a sip of water with medication.
Shurly im allowed to have water to drink theres no way i can go without water for 12hrs?

IM sure u can, i had mine last week and was told i could drink water in-between the 2 hour wait so don't see why not

I had mine the other week and was told only sips of water :( xx

I had mine the other week and was told only sips of water through the fasting and during the test, I assumed it's something to do with it affecting the result:( xx

I was told only enough water to swallow medications and no water until after the test was complete.

I wasn't given a specific time, just not to have anything in the morning before the test, I suppose they mean that once I go bed that's it. I didn't have anything after 12 at night at the test was at 9 O'clock in the morning. I try to get up as near as possible to leaving the house I'm not very good without immediate food and drink (I feel sick). During the 1 hour test they said "don't drink, eat, pee, or move"

Nope, no water. Sorry! I was so dehydrated by the time it was over and that was a big part of why I really hated it.

Just remember not to be sick or pass out as then you'll have to do it again. That was my sister's advice to me as she is a doctor xx

The thing is if you are going to be sick or pass out, is it something you can really control or avoid?

I felt sick immediately after drinking the stuff. They let me take one swig of water and it helped a lot!

I was told I can only drink tap water not bottled I have my letter and it says I can drink Tap water only....I am so confused now? I have my GTT at 30 weeks

I was just told not to eat after 12 and sips of water I think. I did the two hour one and she said I could have water whilst waiting. I had quite a bit tbh because I felt awful, she didn't mention it could throw the results off. Worried now because I was cleared but still had a highish clear result.

ha ha, not the most helpful advice in the world I'll grant you but it's all I got! I did feel sick during it tbh but managed to breathe through the feeling and not throw up.....definitely a skill honed during 3 1st trimesters!

When I did it in first trimester the nurse was hovering nearby with a tray in case I sicked it up :haha: To be honest it wasn't as bad as I envisioned. I suppose you could distract yourself or breath a bit. But they would certainly not let me drink a sip of water!

As I said in the previous post, I suppose you can distract nausea away to an extent or do some breathing as you said. Don't think we could control passing out at will though :haha:

I guess the requirements differ depending on the protocol of the lab you go to.

We perform the GTT for pregnant women and for people suspected of having diabetes all the time. Fasting is not required for the 1 hour which is what we perform to screen our pregnant patients. Fasting is required for the 2 hour and the 3 hour. Our patients are, however, allowed to drink water during the test. It's actually instruction # 2. :)

Plain water should not affect the results. At least, the water here doesn't have glucose in it. Plus, like others have said, it helps keep that nausea at bay. Puking means the test must be done again. Yeck.

I just did mine today and it sounds like it does vary from lab to lab. For the one hour test, I was allowed to eat and drink up until I drank the glucose drink. From there I wasn't allowed to drink water until I got my bloods drawn. But before hand it didn't matter. They just said avoid stuff with extra sugar like drinking a soda or eating a candy bar. My SIL had her test yesterday at a different office and they told her to fast for 12 hours before including no water. So it's kind of weird that it's different.
