Hi ladies,

I know that there are some posts on here about this but I'm a bit worried and think I need to feel a bit more relaxed about the whole thing!

I suffer from M.E and I admit I do drink a lot of Coke and eat a lot of sugary foods to keep my energy levels up due to the M.E which leaves me very tired most of the day.

When my last bloods cam back they said I had a high sugar content, I'm really worried now that it's not the M.E and I have GD!

Having GD doesn't bother me as OH was diagnosed Type1 8 years ago and is insulin dependent but with having a fear off needles I'm scared!!!

GD can make you very tired and washed out also, but once they give you the diet and you get used to it you will feel better. If you do have GD you will have to cut out all the high sugar stuff- I've found that even some 'diet' and no added sugar drinks still make the levels way too high. Basically they will explain that its best for the baby if you can control your glucose levels by diet only as you dont want the baby to get too big and the other risks that can happen also.

Hi there,
I was diagnosed with gd last week and it was very stressful week but I didn't believe them because I do not fit the profile plus my first test they told me I can eat before the test so I did and the next day I got the bad news then they made me do a 3hr test where I sit in the lab for 3 hrs. I am still pissed about the whole thing and how they are making such a big deal about it, they r restricting me off foods now and I have lost 1.5lbs! How is baby gonna grow? My numbers came back with 1 off and if I had movement like go to the bathroom I was probably gonna meet the goal. Again this country is all about the money and I was born in europe where my mom was never tested for gd simply bc its normal for a pregnant woman to have changes! Instead here they put soooo much stress on you and that is causing problems! If you feel like you don't have a gd problem I would suggest keep eating what u used to eat and just cut out chocolate, cakes etc. I've been having normal levels even if I treat myself with something sweet once in a while. So its up to you and how you feel, but don't let them get to u and scare u that ur baby will be big or all the negative stuff they say! Just remember to walk, walking is the best exercise when you're pregnant and it burns all the bad stuff of your body.
Good luck :)

Thanks girls.

Problem is that IF I do have GD and they give me a diet to follow it's going to contradict what my M.E proffessor tells me to do!!!!

I'm gonna be in limbo land!

Also sorry last question how long do the results take to come back?

They told me the next day

Thanks Love so hopefully should there be anything wrong I should know by friday!!!

I had mine done in the morning and they said the results would be back by 4pm, but I couldnt wait so they sent out a letter.

The diet is not too bad, you can still have carbs and stuff but they need to be the right type which release energy slowly- such as swaping white bread for wholemeal, white pasta and rice are fine, potatoes are ok as long as they are fresh and not processed. Fruit juice is a no-no, but you can have some fruit, but veg is best.

If you are diagnosed with GD you will see a midwife who will explain why its really important that you follow the diet- its only for a few weeks anyway- and then you will see a dietician who will go into more detail. After about a week you will see a consultant who will decide wether you need to have insulin or not.

Thanks Belladonna. At least it wouldn't change too much from what foods you have listed.

I'm now on my 12hr fasting and am not happy as I really want a jam donut!!!!

Lol! Jam donuts are definately out! As soon as your LO is born they will test you again and it usually stops straight away, if mine does I will be having a strawberrt milkshake and Mc Flurry from maccy d's, possibly with some krispy kreme donuts!

Are your levels really high if you spoiler yourself with something sweet? I had vanilla ice cream and I was under the recommended 140. Wonder if i really have gd... :-k

Well I can eat fat-free yogurt (as long as there is less than 10g of carbs in 100g) and the level is fine. But if I have if I have no-added sugar squash that you mix with water my levels go crazy!

Remember though, exercise helps to lower the glucose levels quite a bit, so if you are really active your levels will be lower.
