is it safe to have like half a guiness when pregnant?

When my mum was pregnant with my sister (25 years ago now) she was advised by her doctor to have a bottle of guiness every day to keep her iron levels up.

These days unfortunately drinking guiness comes under the general guidelines for drinking alcohol during pregnancy which is not to do it at all as it's not really known how much alcohol is safe.

That said my GP told me I was best to avoid alcohol in the first tri but in the second tri and occasional drink wouldn't hurt, although drinking frequently or getting drunk are right out.

I've decided not to bother (you can probably spot from some of my threads I'm a worrier, lol) but that decision is up to you hun.

My sister, by the way was and still is completely healthy with a baby of her own :-) xx

Not the same, I know, but when i went out for a night with the girls while LO was in neonatal, the nurses recommended guiness for my milk production.

(she was in hospital for 12 1/2 weeks btw, i case you thought i was mad there....)

But drinking while pregnant isnt for me.

it is perfectly fine..granted that youre not doing it everyday or everyweek..I dont think it is good to be in a habit of drinking whilst pregnant..and try not to. With that said I have had about 2 half glasses of wine since pregnant and twice I have had a sip or two of hubby's bear..Im going on a cruise next week and will be enjoying mocktails but probably sip from hubby's real cocktails once in a while..

I have been craving this for some reason? My OH mother told me they used to recommend this for iron levels, but i doubt they would recommend it now.

i've been drinking blue becks, which is non alcoholic and is quite nice. it defo helps my beer cravings. i know its not guiness but its something you can have.

i wouldnt worry too much about the odd half pint of guiness, but everyone is different. x

The guideline is no more than a unit a week if you must drink. I think half a pint is a unit but you need to check. Ive had half a lager a couple of times xxx

I have drank guinness whenever i have been out......i really like it.....its nice to have the odd glass now and then.......

i just think its a little better than drinking wine, pluse wine just sets the heartnburn on again

Guiness is alcohol and for me alcohol in pregnancy is out completely. I have heard that the 'occasional drinks' we are told won't hurt can actually cause restlessness and sometimes behavioural problems in children such as ADHD. If it is iron you are after, it is in a better form in green veg and some cereals. Just my opinion though, and I'm sure if it was one of my cravings, I probably would give in to the odd sip lol!

my midwife told me not to have any alcohol in first 12 weeks but after that you are fine to have 1-2 units once or twice a week and it wont do any harm, havnt had any yet though, might treat myself to half a lager on holiday in a few weeks lol! x

They used to drink it because its full of iron, however there are plenty of healthy ways to consume iron and you only need it if your lacking it.
I dont think one every now and again will harm bubs and i know i had a couple in my prvious pregnancy and my son is perfect, but i wont be bothering with this one!

Hi :flower: personaly I haven't touched a drop of alcohol during any of my pregnancies as all advice ive been given from docs and midwives is zero alcohol throughout , if you fancy a drink then there are loads of non alcoholic lagers , ciders and wines in all the major supermarkets same tase no guilt  im just looking foward to my bottle of morgan's spice ive got waiting for me when my time cooking this baby is over :happydance:
