We went last Wednesday for an appointment and they let us sneak in for a gender scan at 16 + 4. The ultrasound tech was VERY clear about it being too early to say for sure and she wouldn't even be willing to give us odds of it being accurate because that's "so early." (I have issues with her, and I ended up leaving that appointment in tears because of her, but that's a whole other story.) I have a feeling she was trying to cover her own tail, which I can understand because I know that it can possibly be wrong, but I don't know anyone that has actually been told wrong at 16 weeks, so I wonder how common it is.

We couldn't see 3 lines, but we did see a clear potty shot, and there was nothing sticking out either, so she said at this point she's "leaning toward girl" but can't say more than that.

I don't plan to go on a shopping spree, but I would like to go ahead and get a couple of things while I've found a pretty good sale on them.

I've had one and I find out Monday if it was right I was 16+3 when I had it and it was very clear he was a little boy :) xx

We had a neighbor who was told at a much later date scan "100% positive a girl is on the way!" In the delivery room, "Here's your bouncing baby boy!!" They were shocked! ALL of their things were for the daughter they had expected: PINK EVERYTHING!! So, they had to swap things back at stores and buy new things! Yikes!

So, it could and does happen regardless of when you have your scan. I'd say the chances of a lil boy being mistaken as a girl though are slimmer ;)

I'm also worried about this happening. Had two ppl confirm it's a girl at 20wks and going again on Monday and going to ask them to check again, surely 3 medical professionals can be wrong?! I'm not bothered with regards to which sex I just don't want to get used to having a girl on the way and then be totally shocked she's a boy!! X

They can be wrong cos a girls bits can be swollen
By hormones and look like a boy, and a boys bits can grow inverted up until birth

I'm also worried about this! Had a gender scan 16w, they said they didn't want to tell me because of not being 100%, went back week later at 17w, and she was adamant our little one was a girl! I've got my 20w scan next Saturday, an wont tell them that I've had a gender scan, and see if they say anything about girl bits( I know the scan isn't for that but if the person scanning me is nice then why not?) so hoping that'll be our clarification! But now reading about people being told one and coming out the other, think it'll lead me more towards having a 4d scan later on just to make sure :winkwink:

I'm in a similar situation just a week behind you, I had a scan last Wednesday at 15 weeks exactly, they wouldn't say for sure but said looks like a girl & we didn't see anything between the legs , I am going for weekly scans for next 10 weeks due to parvo virus so as long as my bub is healthy each visit i will let you know if she stays looking like a girl each week xxx

I believe the technician was spot on. It is too early to tell. I think too many women push to know early. I certainly know I would like to know early too but if it's not going to be accurate, I would rather wait. It's a 50/50 chance that they are correct. The odds are great either way.

I was told boy at 17 weeks and she was certain, and they confirmed at 20 weeks it's a boy, she even showed me the little winky sticking up between the legs, if it comes out a girl I will be VERY surprised!! I think they're pretty accurate these days if they say they're sure.

With my first pregnancy, I had my scan at 23 weeks and was told by the sonographer that it was a boy... you'd think, that late on they would see the difference....(I was overseas by the way, not in the UK). So...you can imagine my complete shock and surprise that I gave birth to a girl! Was a good shock though. I had a gut feeling to begin with it was a girl and was a bit deflated when the sonographer said boy and always wanted a girl, my whole life. Best surprise of my life!

This time round, I had a very, very clear scan photo at 13w 3d and it looks very female, so I am leaning toward girl this time. Again, felt a gut girl feeling from the start. I have my 20w scan on Thursday so will ask again (even if they don't commit to telling me 100%).

;-))

i had a gender scan at 15+6 and it was very obvious that she was a girl.

Babybond in the UK say it is 99% accurate to have a gender scan with them from 16 weeks. So a highly skilled sonographer should be able to tell. Of course at any stage it isn't 100%. I had one at 17+1 and sonographer said i'm having a girl. I have to agree from the potty shot but will be asking them to reconfirm at my 20 weeks scan:

i had a gender privet scan at take a peek and she was more than certain that i am havein a girl i will let you no if its not because i have me 20 week scan tuesday x x

I was told at my amnio that Fidget is a boy but I'll wait until the full amnio results are through this week before I'll know for sure.

I was told girl at 16+3 but I saw the three lines. I also was told again she was a girl at 20 & 26 weeks. At 26 weeks I saw her labia and clitoris so she definitely is a girl!

My ultrasound lady said she would let me come back for free if she couldnt figure out the gender at my appointment- was there no mention of that for you I guess?

I have with my oldest. I had a scan and the lady didn't stop or show me or anything she just said oh you are having a girl. I was about 15 weeks 6 days but measuring 16 weeks on the dot. I was absolutely ecstatic I went in for another ultrasound at about 23 weeks for my midwife and they asked me if I knew what I was having and I told them that I was told girl and she looked at me very surprised. She then positioned the camera right over the baby's bum and the legs were spreed wide open and low and behold A PENIS!!!! I was shocked and at the same time a little depressed that I was told girl only to be told boy later. I was given many pics at this ultrasound including some to prove he really was a boy. With my other two kids they seem to be on the dot, but who knows stuff can change at birth with this one lol.

With my mom it also happened. With my youngest sister they told her my sister was a boy. We were very very surprised at birth that my sister was not a boy but in fact a very chubby baby girl. The cord was wrapped around her leg giving the appearance of a penis when it wasn't. oh well.

They cannot say they think it's a girl just because there is no sign of a penis! That's how a lot of people get told girl when it's a boy as the penis isnt always easily seen. We were told they must actually see the girl bits (3 lines) so no I wouldn't trust that scan. Sorry. I had scan at 17 weeks, we saw the 3 lines very clearly and told 99.9% girl, at 21 weeks we had another scan which clearly showed girl bits and definitely no penis xx

I had mine at 15+4 and there was no mistaking he's a boy!!! Having it checked tomorrow, but im not doubting it at all, I saw his little willy & balls with my own eyes, there was no mistaking it could be the cord.. since she jiggled the cord out the way, and we saw the cord move away from him.. I had a gut he was a boy.. but we paid for a gender scan, if your sonographer wasnt sure then i'd wait until youve had it confirmed but i could see he was a boy before she told me.. and im not trained in the slightest! she was basically 100% aswell.. :happydance:

I was told at 18 weeks I was having a girl,2 weeks later at my NHS scan was told boy! I went back to baby bond and I DO have a little man growing inside me :) the lady showed me the blood flow going through the cord to make sure it wasnt that between his legs x
