A few days ago Smurfette posted this link

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/women_shealth/3434420/Vitamin-D-can-aid-fertility.html

For those of you that don't want to read the full article, it's basically about how vitamin D can aid fertility and states: "Dr Lubna Pal, from Yale, said: "Of note, not a single patient with either ovulatory disturbance or polycystic ovary syndrome demonstrated normal Vitamin D levels; 39 per cent of those with ovulatory disturbance and 38 per cent of those with PCOS had serum 25OHD levels consistent with deficiency."

The article states that vitamin D can be found in oily fish and eggs, but can be hard to achieve the recommended daily amount from diet alone. Is then goes on to say: "Low levels of Vitamin D are a particular problem in winter when there is less natural exposure to sunlight, from which the body makes the vitamin."

Last year I had a MC in June. Now a couple of months before this I had been going on the sunbeds a few times a week and had built up a nice tan (yes I know, not healthy!). I remember this as we spent some time 2 weeks before my MC at a friends house and pictures were taken, and show me with a dark tan. Pics are on my facebook page which I've just been having a mooch through and can't help but think, did the sunbeds help me to produce enough vitamin D to become pregnant?? I've used sunbeds in the past but not on a regular basis as I was last year, we were not trying/not preventing for 3 years before the MC but without the use of regular sunbeds. I've googled and it would seem that sunbeds help the body to produce vitamin D in the same way as normal, natural sunlight does.

I'd really be interested to hear what other people think about this, I have an appointment with my GP on Tuesday AM so might mention it to her and see what she thinks. Does it sound crazy? Maybe it is and I'm clutching at straws now but might be worth a go??

I certainly don't think it could hurt. Vitamin D is good for you. Now you mention sunlight, I work two jobs - I rarely see the light of day!! Lol, I might look into finding some tablets.

A lot of people get pregnant on holiday. Those who have been trying for ages too. Now it might be because you are more relaxed, but it could be because of the sun also!!!

I've taken vit D supplements for months and months now, and nada... Maybe it just doesnt work for me?

Maybe the way people absorb the vit D, depending on whether it's taken in tablet form or through the skin makes a difference? FX for a good summer and roll on our hols in Portugal!

Does anyone know if light boxes used for Seasonal Affective Disorder emit vit D?

Glad the article was of some interest though!
