I have a horrible sinus cold and have tried taking saline nose spray for 3-4 days now and it doesn't work. I've tried my neti bottle and vicks vapor rub..nothing is working to unplug my nose and I haven't slept in 3 days. Everytime I blow my nose to get some relief it bleeds but is still stuffed up. I'm so exhausted and need to sleep but was told by the pharmacist to just stick it out and use the saline nose spray instead of decongestant nose spray. Has anyone used the decongestant or was recommended it by their doctors?? I am so ready to give in and use it so I can get some rest finally.

My Dr said it was okay but then I looked online and saw it a C class drug - no human data has been sufficiently studied  I used it the bare minimum amount ( dristan nasal spray) just before bed for a few days for the same reasons you indicate....but I am a bit worried.......

I know what you mean. I'm horribly congested, i thought i was sick, or had allergies. But I read in a few books that it's common during the 2nd trimester to get stuffy.
I don't know whether you can use decongestant sprays, it really depends on the specific medication it contains. Im sorry I don't have an answer to your question, I would also like to know what others think. Hopefully you get some more replies.. If all else fails, I suppose ask your dr and they can recommend treatments xx

I had horrible sinuses prior to being pregnant and got very sick with a cold. The saline sprays did absolutely nothing for me and I had a headache for a week straight with blocked ears. Really wanted to curl up and die but everyone told me to steer clear of decongestants :(

Decongestants are a no no. Pretty much all medication besides paracetamol is (except if you're seriously ill, obviously!!!). I feel your pain, I have a stinking cold at the minute too :(

My doctor gave me nasonex as i was having awful problems with my nose and hadnt slept in ages cause i was constantly sneezing, blocked, runny.. its bloody brilliant and worked from the 2nd use, ive had no problems since.

Oh my god, I miss using Nasonex. I used to breathe like a dream after that stuff.

Nasonex is what my doc prescribed me when I had sinus infections a couple of months ago and even tho they finally cleared, I'm meant to use it every day....i just keep forgetting, but my nose etc is very dry and has been over last few days so will start again today!
Ask your doc to prescribe some hon, hope you feel better soon xx

I am for sure going to ask him to prescribe me Nasonex :) I stuck it out using the saline again last night, I was all set in my mind to use the decongestant spray and then my nose cleared up a little so I could sleep. I would hate to take it and then worry about something being wrong so I won't be using it. Seeing my doctor on Sept 7th...thanks ladies xoxo

My doctor, the pharmacist, and the little pamphlet on safe medications to take during pregnancy I got all say that nasal decongestants are fine.

There is a nasal decongestant with the brand name of "Rhinocort". Both my OB/GYN and internal med Drs told me it was safe to use in pregnancy. It's considered a Class B. I used is for a while in the first trimester for allergies. I ran out of it though :(. It doesn't work as good as Flonase or Veramist (sp?) But its rated a safer drug class. It worked fine while I was using it.

I suffer chronic pregnancy induced sinusitis since aug 2007 when pg with ds. I have had steroids, antibiotics, every spray and surgery but nothing has touched it, it was manageable but when it got worse it was my first pg symptom!! I use Vicks sinex spray or otrivine which in my sons pg was prescribed to me. I use it several times a day and can't be without it or my nose completely shuts off :-( my doc knows I use it and has never told me not too. Hope you find something that works for you. X

I would seriously not reccommend using nasal decongestant spray, pregnant or not pregnant. That stuff is evil!! It provides temporary relief but when it wears off the congestion comes back even worse. The bottle says only use for 2-3 days or it will lead to rebound congestion, but I got rebound congestion after using it for one day! I had horrible congestion for like 2 months of this pregnancy and my OB said it was fine to use...but it took a week for me to get over the rebound congestion and it was awful. This was just my experience but thought I'd share

My doctor told me Sudafed is ok in moderation if you really need it. I had a terrible sinus infection at 8 weeks and i was desperate, so i took a half dose about twice a day for 2 days and it really helped. I've heard a lot of doctors say Sudafed is ok in small doses even though it is a category c. Hope you feel better.

i was the same, had a horrendous cold last week. doctor said to stay clear of any of the normal nose sprays. I really wouldnt risk it and just stick to the saline spray, it actually worked for me - just spray 3 times in each nostril and lie down for a couple of minutes before blowing your nose.
