Having a baby at Jessops Wing - Sheffield

I'm having my baby at the Jessops Wing in Sheffield and after having our antenatal classes there recently we've been left really puzzled about how to actually get there when the big event happens. I know parking round there is horrendous, but I always assumed there would be special arrangements when you're in labour and being picked up to go home. We therefore always planned to drive there when the time came, but we were told in the class that they only allow parking at the labour ward entrance for 30 minutes, then you have to move your car. Frankly I've never seen a spare parking space in the main car park or on the street, so I was wondering what other people have done about getting there?

I don't like the idea of my OH just dumping me at the entrance and then having to go off and find a parking space that might be 10-15 mins walk away. And how do you go about being picked up from Jessops to take baby home if there's literally nowhere to park?!?

I'm wondering whether it would just be best to see if we can get lifts!

Hello - me too!

I know it says 30 minutes but my friend had her baby there and they just left the car there the whole time, I think in reailty they're fairly relaxed about it, though it is a bit of a risk

We were going to get a taxi originally but now my OH is on my car insurance so he can drive me. The multistorey shuts at night (which is ridiculous) and there is no other parking around there.

If you can get a lift it might be better if you don't want to risk your car, I suppose it all depends what time you go into labour. I can't think of anywhere nearby that isn't timed or resident only parking.

I can try and remember to let you know how we get on as my LO is due next week x

Have you watched the Jessops Wing Tour video? They talk about parking and arrival on there, it's on the web.

The blokes at our NCT class were actually having a big discussion about parking and drew a map with useable parking spaces near the hospital grounds (but in residential areas) between them, the difficulty being most of the roads in that area are permit holders only. We've actually had an aquaintance offer us his visitors permit too if we need it.

If you get a taxi in labour be aware some of the drivers are iffy about taking labouring women....I had to convince the operator I wasn't in labour when I had to get to Jessops stat for monitoring a couple of months back.....take lots of towels to sit on!

hi..im having my 4th baby at jessops... i had my 1st at the old jessops and my 2nd,3rd and this 1{4th}at the new one!!with my 2nd child,i got blue lighted in so parking wasnt an issue but with my 3rd i got induced... the parking is a F@&ing NIGHTMARE....the mulit story closes at 10.00pm,plus its a fortune!half way through my 3rd labour OH had to move car but did manage to get parked on road and bk to see are son born!!there is sum on street parking...night time is always the best time to get parked on the roads... u pay from 8am-6.30pm i think its 60p or 80p an hr..but u are only supposed to stay there 4hrs tops... {TIP dnt let traffic warden c u put money in or u will get a ticket!} then after 6.30pm its free till nxt day...{free parking all day sunday on roads}.....
apart from the parking iv found jessops to be a really good hospital!!!!!!

One of my friends OH left her car on the main road with a little note in it saying wife in labour if i need to move my car call and then left his number, he didnt even get a ticket how lucky!

I dont even know where to go if i go into labour at night as the main Jessops entrance closes at night

I went into the emergency entrance at 4am the other day and it was open, it's the building above where the normal maternity clinic is (I didn't know this so was actually glad to have gone in before actual labour!). It's nice to see some other women going to Jessops, it's my first baby there.

Oh Gawd, I hadn't even thought about parking at Jessops. I knew about the 30 minutes thing, which my husband was disgusted about, but we had just assumed we could park in the main part of jessops or in the multi storey. Now I realise they are closed at night I don't know what we will do. I'm not getting the frikking tram followed by a 20 minute walk to get to the hospital, that is mad during labour!!!

I guess the last thing the hubby and I will be thinking about is parking on the day. Lets hope we can just ask at the hospital when we get there.

Its my second child but my first time at Jessops i had my first at Rotherham they were really good so im hoping things go well this time.

Nearly there now which is lovely! Though this pregnancy has flown by. I had my last baby in Walsall and it was really good, I'm tempted to go and hang about there when I'm due!

I'm pretty sure you go into the Labour Emergencies entrance whatever the time of day if your going in because your in labour, as I am pretty sure that is the entrance that leads to Triage & assessment.

The online tour was useful, thank you. Do you think if you're on the mw led unit and then you decide you need an epidural they have to move you across to a different room?

According to my NCT ladies they will move you to consultant led if you need/want an epidural if they have a room available, basically consultant led is just at one end of the labour ward with midwife led at the other. If there isn't a room, they might move you closer to the consultant end but leave you in a midwife led room.

That sounds better than moving completely, the mw rooms are much more homely looking!

I've been told I have to be in a consultant lead room. I was gutted I couldn't be in the midwife lead area. Stupid bladder complications.

I've always been consultant led due to my heart murmur but as that midwife I saw the other day was saying I could have a home birth if I wanted I'm hoping to be mw led this time.

Looks like we might try and get a lift then - unless it’s the middle of the night and we’ll take our own car. There’s always spaces at the emergency entrance (which is a bit of a misleading name for it - they confirmed when we went for our classes that this is simply the entrance you go to when in labour!), so you’d think they’d let you stay there throughout and when being picked up to go home.

Scuffer - Good luck for next week (or whenever it happens!). I also think the MW led rooms look more homely (and they’re the only ones with a pool and a birthing chair). I’m on the consultant led unit as well and the midwife running the class looked horrified when I said they just looked really clinical, like a normal hospital room. There was a lady on the class however who had been in one of the consultant led rooms the previous week (in premature labour) and she said they were still really nice.

Sooz - the midwife spoke about the problems with taxi drivers as well and that you have to pretend you’re going there for something else - I imagine that’s a bit difficult if you’re having contractions every 5 minutes!

It is ridiculous that they close the main car parks at night. The Jessops car park (near the main entrance) is no entrance after 8.30pm - do they not expect women to go into labour at night?!

I nearly went to Chesterfield Royal to have baby just because the parking there is excellent. I work there though and I wasn’t keen on having a baby where I work LOL.

When i go into labour the last thing i want to worry about is were to put the bloody car lol and like someone else said i really dont want OH dissapearing to park especially in that area of sheff it could be miles away lol. At rotherham if you need to park for a long time you used to be able to get a permit from the ward your staying at so you can park on hosp grounds for free or at least this is what it was like with my first any way :-/ hope it hasnt changed lol.

Do they? I was going to go to Rotherham as it'd probably be easier for me to get to. And easier for OH to get to with him working in Rotherham (that's if he was working when I went into labour). But I decided against going there.. :/ Didn't really know what parking was like tbh
