I just got back from my infertility follow up appt to hear the results of all my tests and my treatment plan.

I have PCOS...okay.....and I have salpingitis in my left tube, so I need to have it removed. It seems my tube is infected and likely the liquid or pus from it would kill or wash away an embryo so they won't proceed with treatment until my tube is removed. They said that iui or ivf will be our options after my tube is removed.

Has anyone else had salpingitis and their tube removed? What is the removal like? Any advice or recommedations?

I am feeling pretty down today after hearing this ... I was expecting to hear that I just needed some medication.....sigh........

...didn't want to read and run....hope you're feeling better....have you considered getting a second opinion, or are you confident with the doc....i just don't like having things 'removed' when there might be other options......xxxxx

Thank you brumbar......

I was thinking that too...I hate to have it removed if unnecessary...the news is so new that im not even sure what to think, what to do or what my options are.

hi
i had an ectopic pregnancy 2 years ago and i had to have my right fallopian tube removed......to be honest with you if i were in your situation i would go ahead and have your tube removed because the last thing you want is to fall pregnant and to end up having an ectopic pregnancy because believe me they really are a horrible thing to go through.......any slight problem to your tubes can cause an ectopic so if like you say they have advised you to have a tube out then i would go ahead and have it done

i also wont lie to you and make out the afterpain is ok because it isnt it hurts like hell......i am being honest with you so you know what to expect......the recovery time depends on each person but i was in tesco doing my shopping 3days afterwards!
obviously mentally is a different story......your going to feel a huge loss...losing a tube....because in effect you are losing some of your fertility.....you should google it and get as much info as possible
it is possible to fall pregnant after losing a tube......my cousin lost a tube and 12 months later fell pregnant naturally with twins!!
sadly it is a different story for me as i am undergoing fertility treatment myself.....but fingers crossed!
hope everything goes ok for you x x x

Thank you Danni0509.

I appreciate your honesty about the pain - nothing worse than being shocked by the amount of pain. Yeah I am feeling sad cause it does feel like a loss of my fertility even if it is actually getting in the way of my fertility.

Fxd for you too......what fertility treatment are you having?

Best wishes and thanks again.

Blue I lost my R tube in April due to my second ectopic in the same tube 5 years apart. I would agree if the docs say to then they are probably right. If it has a posion in it even if you were to get pregnant with good tube the posion from the bad tube can cause you to MC or even worse affect your good tube by growing more infected and building up more scare tissue. I fully believe that I will get pregnant with one tube and think the bad tube may have been holding up the process for so long. I didnt feel that much pain only a day or so but the emotional pain (especially) losing a baby in the process was so hard. If you wanna chat or have any questions let me know. I am here for you.

hi blue 12
i am having ivf
but having to pay private for a number of reasons :( :( :(
so at the moment we are saving hard!
as soon as we have the money we will be going for it!
we have been ttc for 7 years
how long have you been ttc for?
xx xx x

danni,
I too will have to do IVF privately if I dont conceive naturally. It is soooo much money in the US so I am going to try quite a bit longer before I go that route. Do you have other fertility issues besides only one tube? I have been trying well not preventing for 12years but actively trying since my first tubal 5 years ago. Just went to FS 2 years ago.

Thanks to both of you.

I know that just one tube isn't the end of the world...but I have never even had a chemical or an ectopic which makes me think there is still something else they have not discovered that is leading me to not be able to get pregnant, unless it really has been my left tube all this time (13 years infertility - - 10 years ntnp, 3 years trying opk temping charting etc.)

What a terrible process to go through.

Blue,
then maybe getting a second opinion would be best how did they determine the issue with your tube? Was it with a Lap or dye test?

It was a sonohystrogram - with saline solution and ultrasound or scan...........not a lap and dye with x-ray..........I was wondering if they should do a lap and dye and if the results would be more accurate.

Maybe you can suggest that what my dr did was I knew I had an ectopic so she went ahead and did the lap to remove that tube (especially because it was my second in the same tube) and while she was in there she ran dye throught the other tube and if need be she was going to remove that one as well. So maybe you can just go in for a lap and they can do the dye test while doing the lap and if they think it is bad remove the tube at that time. Unfortunatly you will be knocked out so if they remove it you wont know I woke up asking all the nurses if I still had any tubes. Lucky the Left one was fine but it could have been a much worse outcome.

Puppymom Im so sorry to hear what you have been through. I cannot imagine having to wake up to find that they have made the decision... but makes sense. I am going to call and ask some of these questions.

Thank you so much for your support. I truly appreciate it!!
:hugs2:

No problem glad I can help. Definetly get all of your questions answered because once it is done it is done but I also dont want you to have to go thru the pain of an ectopic especially because they can be so dangerous. Big Hugs

hi blue12

I had my right tube removed in june 2006. mine was due to pelvice inflammatory disease (my doc mentioned the other day that i had salpingitis which basically means an indfection of the fallopian tube) Are you in any pain?
I was in severe pain my surgery was only supposed to be an investigation to find out the problem so it was really hard to be told once i was out of the op that i had a tube removed. I have gone on to conceive twice since having it removed and am curretly ttc at the mo! The afterpain for me was not that bad but that could be because i compare it to the pain i was in before surgery! i remember being up and runing again in no time!
So anyway i can understand you wanting to get a 2nd opinion, but at the same time if you have salpngitis sometimes removal is the only option. I think it can spread too (dont hold me to this though ;-) so it may well be the better option in the long run. You will also be pleased and no doubt surprised to hear that the chances of conceiving with 1 tube are not much lower that with 2, or so my doc old me.
So anyway enough from me - good luck and let me know how u get xx

just to add, if the tube is damaged and stays put you are more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy too hun.
xx

Thank you so much Franiss.

I cannot imagine waking up and finding outmy tube was gone. Congratulations on the two little ones - Do you mind me asking a couple of questions - did you ever have a chemical or ectopic pg before you had your tube removed? Did you conceive your two naturally after the tube removal? How long did you ttc for each of the two? - Thanks in advance.

I am trying to digest this new piece of information and it does seem that I need to have the tube removed from everything that I have read. The doc did mention (along with a few websites) that the infection can spread which is scary. I wasn't sure what the success rate was with only one tube - but your experience sounds very positive.

Best wishes on ttc your next little one!!!

Hi Blue,

Sorry about your news.
I had my left tube removed about 6 weeks ago.
We had been TTC for less than 12 months and had 3 early pregnancy losses when we sought help. I am a medical student and have read all the literature on removal of infected tubes (hydrosalpinx). Although there are a small number of studies, they are very promising. If you have one infected tube, and have it removed, the studies I read showed over 80% of women got pregnant after, at an average of 5 months later. For removal of both tubes, you would need IVF, but the research shows that removal of the tubes significantly improves the outcome of IVF.

I was so upset about this when I first found out the cause of our problems, but after so long TTC and so many losses, I figured there wasn't much else I could do but get rid of the dodgy tube.

As for the 'real deal' - I had my tube removed laprascopically. I have had a lot of surgery in the past, but this was nowhere near as bad. I spent one night in hospital (due to complexity of surgery for me) and was in a bit of pain for a few days - I just blobbed around home and had panadeine forte for the pain (codeine and panadol). By 1 week after surgery I was fine, and back to normal within 10 days.
I am still waiting for my BFP but I am hopeful as it has only been 6 weeks since the surgery

My decision was made in that the dodgy tube wasn't working anyway, so better out than in. I felt after 5 losses before the surgery, we really had no other option.

All the best, please ask me any questions you like.
xx
