Having a tube removed...

OliveOyl,

Im so sorry to hear what you have been through too. Fxd that your sticky bfp comes very soon. You are so positive and that is inspiring.

Thank you so much for taking the time and care to share this information and experience with me. You are right if the tube isn't working then it seems it is better if it is out. The only thing that I am feeling a bit confused about right now is that in 3-13 years, I have never had a bfp, never a chemical, never a mc, never an ectopic..........I feel like there is more than the tube being wrong which makes me worry. Either case I understand the tube needs to come out otherwise any other treatment is useless, but I just feel like I am still without answers which is hard.

I truly appreciate the information about the tube, I have had trouble finding information about this and cannot express how grateful I am that I have the wonderful people of bnb and their support.

Thank you and best wishes.

Hi Blue,

There were a couple of studies I read on hydrosalpinx.

One was for women who had NEVER had a BFP and of those 88% were PG within 1 year. I think this is the most common scenario. A second study looked at women with hydrosalpinx and recurrent pregnancy losses. I am a bit unusual in that I have uterine didelphys (complete duplication of uterus, each with one tube) so the problem of the toxic fluid from the tube killing embryos wasn't an issue for me. The uterine tissue though is inflamed and this would cause early pg loss/no BFP. All my losses have been very early (before 5 weeks pg).

I also worry that there may be something else causing the problem , but our semen analysis, and all bloods looking for clotting disorders, thyroid problems and chromosomal abnormalities have been normal.
We are hoping to be PG with a sticky one my xmas, if not will pursue it further. One step at a time.

After 3 years of TTC, you have nothing to lose getting your tube removed, its doing you no favours. Have you had other testing?

I know its scary, I was really upset when I first found out, but after another loss and having read the studies I knew it was our only option. The drs were reluctant to do the surgery on me as I have had a lot in the past and it was complicated, but they did a fab job.

Its a shitty thing to have happen, and it sucks. Wishing you all the best and happy to answer questions or send the research papers to you for some reading if you like.

xx

Wow amazed at how many there are of with one tube. Fran you are an inspiration to all of us with one tube trying to concieve. Olive I am in a similar situation as you just had my tube removed in April after 4 MC including 2 ectopics back to ttc with one tube. Thanks for all the helpful information.

Blue, what my dr did was while she had me open for the lap went ahead and looked over everything to see if there were any other issues she found a fibroid in my uterus and some mild endo but said removing it would cause more damage than good. I was kinda suprised but she said it shouldnt affect my conceiving.

I created a buddy group called One Tubers for anyone TTC with one tube wether it is just blocked or removed if anyone wants to join.

Hi Blue12

I am glad i made you feel more positive. Well i wasnt actually trying either time i fell pregnant! i had my tube removed june 06 and conceived April 07 having not long stopped taking the pill (for reasons other than ttc) the 2nd time i fell pregnant i had one cycle after having my son and stopping breastfeeding (my son was 12 months) and we literally bd twice that month - unfortunately i had a m/c at 7 weeks but that wasnt anything to do with tubes etc just one of those unfortunate things :sad2:
No i hadnt had an ectopic pregnancy or anything, it was just an infection that was left too long undetected and spread into my reproductive organs. I was told by my consultant gynae at the time that i should go back to her after 6 months of trying to consider IVF but she did say she had seen alot of people in a 'much worse position' down below conceive naturally.
I know it is easy for me to say but try and stay positive, if you dont go ahead you could mess up your chance. Any doc i have spoken to doesnt think its much of an issue which always makes me happy.
Get in contact any time if you have any more questions or just want someone to talk to.

puppymom32 how do i find the buddy group??

If you go to the trying to conceive forums sections where you click to go into LTTC a few down there should be an area called TTC Buddies and One Tubers is halfway down the page.

You Rock!!!!!!

You have so much information on this and are so willing to share so much and care for others. You are awesome!

Sorry to hear that you had so many losses and the unique situation with your uterus.

I have had all the other tests and everything else is normal except pcos - but I do ovulate.

Thanks again!!!!!

:hugs2:

Thanks blue! I'm about to graduate as a doctor in 3 1/2 months, so using my skills to research our issues. I'm a bit of a nerd and feel better knowing all the information.

puppymom - great idea to have a usergroup for those of us who are tubally deficient! See you there :)

franiss - thanks for sharing your story. Its great to have such a fab role model! Here's hoping!

Oliveoyl......congrats on almost being a doc!!!

I know I prefer to have information too....I am google addicted but there doesn't seem to be that much information on one tube and some that I found seems to be conflicting........which was making me crazy and so I am so appreciative of the information you have shared.

I want to make informed decisions and I want to know realistically the future steps and progress I have to take.

Have you come across anything where taking medication to remove the infection worked?

Thanks again.

Sorry blue, I haven't.
I think the theory is, if your tube in infected and the little 'hairs' inside that move the egg are damaged and the tube is dilated, it can't be reversed. Did you tube look dilated on the hsg? The pathology on my tube showed chronic inflammation, even though I had intravenous antibiotics ~2 months before for the infection. I haven't looked for papers specifically on that topic, but my FS seemed to think that it wouldn't work if you haven't solved the problem in the tube, and there is the risk of ectopic in a damaged tube.

Hi oliveoyl,

Thanks for that information too. I didn't see the results but the FS said that the tube is very very inflammed and swollen - huge as she said it. Then she said my recommendation is immediate removal. I think at that point the shock on my face was huge and then she was like or we could clip it or tie it. She is consulting the surgeon and getting back to me.

I was in shock and knew nothing about this and so didn't even know what questions to ask her at the time, like how bad is the infection or could I take meds or how soon it could spread or anything........I didn't even ask or she didn't tell me if I should stop ttc naturally until it is out.

I hate the feeling that I have to wait for something else now and I just want to get things happening.

Sorry for my random rambling.

Sigh....

Hi Blue,

Sounds like you do have a hydrosalpinx. The research I have read showed that removal of the affected tube is better in terms of pregnancy rates afterwards, compared with clipping. My FS said that the problem with clipping is that the tube isn't removed and the inflammation remains. The way they think the tube problem affects fertility is by toxic fluid killing embryos trying to implant in your uterus, and also by stimulating inflammation, preventing implantation.

I initially looked at the clipping, but wanted the best treatment to improve our chances of a sticky pregnancy. Its a lot of info to take in straight away. Take some time to think your options through.

I know I nearly went crazy waiting for the surgery. I hope things work out and get sorted quickly

Thanks so much Oliveoyl!

Yeah it is hydrosalpinx. She did mention the fluid. I am still devastated to have it out - but if it is so detrimental then I want it out as soon as possible. I am going to call today to see if they have heard anything yet.

I didn't realize how recently you had your removed oliveoyl......just this June crazy!

Hi Girls

Thought i would let you girls know that i got my BFP today 2nd month ttc with one tube! It really is possible.
I wish you all the luck in the world, baby dust to you all
xx

Awww how amazing. That is wonderful. Big Congrats. Healthy Happy 9 mo.

WAHOOOOOOOO Franiss...................Congrats that is freaking awesome...........and we just started our team.

Keep us posted with your progression. I am so happy and so jealous. I just want to get this tube out and get things started.

Congrats again. Wahoo!
:hugs2:

Yaaaay franiss - go one tubers! Nice work! All the best for a happy healthy pregnancy. You've done the team proud.

Blue - yep, had the surgery 7 weeks ago. Felt a bit sore for a few days, back to normal in less than 10 days. I was amazed how quickly I recovered having the laprascopic surgery. Have 4 small incisions that are healed but still pink, will fade over time. Off to try acupuncture next week to improve implantation - studies on acupuncture while doing IVF show 65% increased pregnancy rate, so I think well worth a go for me. Good luck getting through to your specialist and getting things booked. Hugs - I was so devastated after I found out, but by our 5th loss I was totally committed as we weren't getting anywhere! xx

Hey oliveoyl,

So excited to see your team name in your siggy.

I'm sure that I will have laprascopic surgery too - Im going to have funny little scars all over me as I have had one before to remove my gallbladder lol.

You explain the feelings very well. Although it is devastating at the thought of losing a tube - if were not getting anywhere then why not - it takes away from the pain of it all a bit.

I want to do acupuncture too - I was just waiting to hear what my "problems" were before going to the acupunturist. I've also heard a lot of good about reflexology. Oliveoyl are you going to an acupuncturist that specializes in fertility?

Take care.

Hi Blue,

Yes, i now feel like I belong somewhere! Love the siggy, you did a nice job on it.
Sorry you've had surgery in the past, but I guess at least it means you know what you are signing up for.

I found it so much easier to cope when I knew WHAT the problem was, and that there was something I could do about it. I feel so much better when I am DOING something, I think I feel more in control in this situation where there is very little that can be controlled.

I am seeing an acupuncturist who is also a registered midwife & specialises in TCM/acupuncture for pregnancy and fertility. A good friend of mine who is an acupuncturist elsewhere in the country recommended her. I am so excited, and hope it helps with our sticky one. I'll let you know how it goes.

xx
