I hope you ladies might be able to help me.

I am totally confused by the whole benefits/working tax & child tax credits, so much so that my head hurts!

My partner and I have just decided to split up. He currently lives in the marital home and will be buying me out (i dont want to live there). I now live in rented accommodation near family and am only just 5 weeks pregnant.

As soon as i receive the money from the house settlement, (probably £25,000) i am planning on putting this in a bank acct for the time being and when i have decided on the area where i want to live and the LO is here, then i will hopefully buy my own place, if i can afford to.

However, will the government etc - take into account that i have £25,000 saved (its not really saves coz i need to put it down on another house, without it, i would not be able to get another mortgage) and not allow me to claim certain benefits, tax credits ? etc

I am planning on returning to work part time and from what i understand will probably only be able to claim child benefit, and child tax credit but i am worried that my house deposit money will stop me claiming my full allowance. also would i be able to claim for child care ?

sorry for long post. i know i am only 5 weeks gone but facing life as a single mum and worrying about money - its important i know how much i will have to live on.

your advice is very much appreciated
