Help build a newborn stash!

We have been cloth diapering my daughter for over a year now, since she was about 2 months old. We went straight into a one-sized system, so I have no experience with sized diapers.

This time around, we want to cloth diaper our baby from birth, but am not sure where to start. I would like to go as inexpensive as possible, but still be able to get some of our money back as I think this will be our last baby.

My two thoughts are prefolds with newborn covers or flats with newborn covers and maybe a few newborn all in ones for night changes. Also would be getting a few more one-size shells as our DD and baby will eventually share diapers.

I know about 24 prefolds or flats would be the best, but how about covers? Maybe 6?

So confusing! Help! What would be your inexpensive newborn stash?

I would look for second-hand covers/seconds sales. I ended up buying a lot of Blueberry/Swaddlebees newborn covers for cheap when they had a seconds sale on their website-- the tags were just missing, lol. Already building up my stash for the second so we can cloth from birth as well. Good luck! I see newborn stuff going all the time on diaperswappers, but it's not much cheaper than new there because they're all still in such good condition.

I'll be cloth diapering my first kiddo starting at the hospital. I'm trying mostly flats, prefolds, workhorse fitteds, Imagine bamboo fitteds and of course KL0s. The Imagine bamboo fitteds are only $9.95. As for covers, I'm trying: Thirsties, Swaddlebees, Diaper Safari, Bumkins and a WAHM. I'm ordering one newborn Alva (pocket diaper) just to see how a China cheapy is. I've heard the minimum amount for covers could be 3.

I'd get some fitteds for night changes rather than AIOs. They're a little easier and quicker to change than flats so good when you're fumbling in the dark, but much more reliable than AIOs and we've always found reliability to be most important at night time. If you got something like bamboo or hemp, the absorbency would probably be better than your average AIO so as LO starts needing fewer changes at night you should be able to boost them to last the night for a few months at least.

I'd say 6 covers should be fine as they wash and dry easily but I would aim for 4 different brands in that number in case one or two don't suit your LO's shape.

This will be my first, so I don't have any actual experience, but after a lot of internet research, I've decided to try this route too; prefolds with covers in the newborn stage. I really like the idea of natural cotton against the baby's skin.

I'm going to order my prefolds from greenmountaindiapers.com. They have a really nice, informative website, and supposedly their prefolds are the very best, but not too expensive either. They also have lots of covers, but I think I can get those 2nd-hand off Ebay for cheaper.

I'm also going to get a few of their workhorse fitted diapers for night-time changes, to make things a bit easier when I'm tired. Supposedly buying the ones without snaps and using a snappi gives a better fit, especially for newborns.
