Hi, I had my son this july and I am now pregnant again due in june. With my son I had morphine and gas and air as pain relief and when my son was born he was not breathing and for the first few days of his life he had feeding issues anddidnt wake up. I cannot do this to this baby as I know the risks now.... but im terrified of not having anything!

I no I could probably get an epidural but I think I could cope without this as didnt feel I needed it last time, iv also been told as it will only have been 11 months since my last birth that the baby will probably come very quickly.

Is there anything else in the uk I can have?

I know you said you don't want to go without anything, but have you thought about trying hypnotherapy? I did natal hypnotherapy and honestly I never even thought about even asking for gas and air. I had a 12 hour labour (at home) with just a TENS machine. It really wasn't that painful. The only thing that really hurt was the stupid cervical exam. Uncomfortable and intense, yes, but not unbearably painful.

As for drugs, yes, your only other option would be an epidural or a spinal. But if you want to avoid that, there's no harm in trying something like hypnotherapy and seeing if it helps. You might still find you want something but then again you might not. It's cheap as well. I did natal hypnotherapy. Just 12 quid for the CD to practice and 12 quid for the birth music CD. You don't need any expensive classes as long as you practice at home.

Thanks! i will look into this, i felt even with the morphine and gas &air all it really made me feel was adrunk feeling but it didnt take the pain away. I also think it was one of the reasons i had a bad tear as i cudnt concentrate on what the midwife was saying when she told me to stop pushing etc. I will certainly look into this, just sounds really scary not having anything!

Another vote for Natal Hypnotherapy here - I used it and had a completely pain free and drug free labour and home birth. Just because the pharmacutical pain relief is not an option doesn't mean that you have run out of options.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to shout me!

What about a water birth? I unfortunately couldn't have one but my friends who did say it was amazing!

Natural birth isn't for everyone but I had a better labour experience with out drugs than any of my friends did with drugs. I honestly think that things like staying mobile helped me cope with pain more than any drug would have done. I was pretty determined to do it drug free because my mother had one birth with drugs and two without. She said that the drugs effected her and the baby for days after.

Another vote for hypnotherapy here. Water birth also helped me, and a TENS machine. I only had G&A, and wouldn't want drugs in any future birth.
