Hey

I have been trying to fed my new born but am having trouble with the latch and my poor nipples have suffered, does anyone know if I can give him some formula or do I have to do something first

Hi,

I had to give Max formula in the hospital as he would not latch on and got dehydrated. Give your health visitor a ring, they may be able to advise which formula is best and will also be able to provide some breastfeeding support.

:hugs:

While I was trying BFing (which wasnt working out) I gave him formula and breast milk and he had no problems.

Have you thought about expressing if LO wont latch? You can also get nipple shields that can help with the sore nipples, and Lanisoh cream is a godsend! You should also talk to the girls in the BF section, they might be able to give you some more advice:thumbup:

Having said all that, I combine fed Evie (BF, FF and also expressed breastmilk) for about a week before switching to exclusive FF (my supply dropped and Evie was lazy on the breast)
The combine feeding can often make your own milk supply drop so it might be worth expressing as well to keep your supply up
As LeeLee said, if you're having latching problems, you should seek some help from your HV about breastfeeding support, especially if you want to continue to BF :hugs:

yeah i was gonna say the same as mynx, it wont do harm to top up but if you give a full bottle then the baby wont feed well or for ages, if you do top up then just use the readymade carton and if you can do it from a babyspoon and only give an oz or so then just to tide LO over untill you can try Bf again, i agrtee tho speak to people in the BF section im sure they can offer more advice about BF'ing,
