my son was in nursery 2 mornings a week where they picked up some speech and learning difficulties. he was being referred for speech therapy and a CAF assessment.
we have just relocated and im looking for a new nursery for him and its proving a bit difficult as many dont have any vacancies for some time and i dont just want to put him in any nursery. it needs to be right for him.

im a bit worried that without having him in nursery any help we were in line for ie; the CAF assessment etc we wont get now as he wont have the second setting (ie; school) they insist on for many of these things.

i hope i make sense. im a bit of a rookie at this special needs stuff atm.

anyway ultimately my question is, does he get any kind of preferential treatment for getting to the top of a schools waiting list or something like that if he has special needs.

im really worried that hes going to fall way behind if i dont keep up momentum on this and get him the help he needs now.

any help or advise appreciated

Hi Hun,

My daughter has SLI (Speech and Language Impairment) It is very important that he goes to a nursery suitable for him and has SEN (Special Educational Needs) provision and Early years support. My daughter went to a nursery that totally depressed her they were very critical and kept forcing her to talk almost everyday they kept telling me she's not saying any words although I notified them before she started there.

The best advise I can give you is research as much as possible they have a charity called Afaisic and Ican who specialises in speech and language impairments/disabilities. Afasic were so helpful and I got all the info on how to move forward my biggest help was from my GP who referred me on my first appointment to a SLT(Speech and Language Therapy) I got an appointment fairly quickly and she was diagnosed from there she had 8 blocks of SLT sessions every 3months, I then moved home and got a health visitor who referred me to a pediatrician and suggested I got DD into a state nursery that was the best decision I have ever made!

I got her into a Sure Start Nursery they had everything in place a SEN key worker a SLT, and an education psychologist from this point they got me in touch with the entire team I researched Language Units in my area and told them that is where I wanted DD to attend she then got referred by her SLT to the SEN panel who decides on statementing and SEN placements, I still had to do the normal school application through the local council as a backup I did research the schools to make sure they had SEN provisions to ensure if she did not get accepted she would have a school temporarily until I appealed luckily she got accepted first attempt and she loves it so much also the progress she is making is fantastic!!

Language unit places are so limited they take a total of 10 children each intake per language unit as your LO is still young I would advise to get the ball rolling and try to get as much support as possible.

PM if you ever need anything else x
