I was referred for a growth scan as my stomach was measuring full term last week. Well the scan showed 3900 grms. around 8lb 10oz. The scan person said it could be a pound either way but this is big for 36 weeks.

I have really bad spd where i can hardly do anything. I have been offered crutches but this is not an option as i always have my son in his pushchair when i go out so i cant obviously use them.
I cant even open my legs fully.

Well even with the size of the baby and severe spd the consultant is still leaving me to go natural. :(

I have no idea why. I understand about my body and the baby not being ready but this is scaring the poo out of me.

Surely i can not pass a big baby through my pelvis??? My son was 9lb 4oz and he got stuck. :(

Does anyone have any stories of anything similar and everything been ok? Or even if it was not ok i would like to hear your experiences.
What was your birth and the final weight of your baby?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you

Hi, I had a growth scan 4 days before LO was born via emcs. The dr said he was a little over 5lbs at 32 weeks. When he was born, he was only 4lbs 4oz so def not all that accurate. Can you not talk to a dr about your concerns as I def see them as legitimate! Given your condition and previous experience, even a lb less now can easily make a big baby if you go a few more weeks!

At 36 weeks, I think my son was measuring to be 8 lbs. 13 ounces or something like that, so I had a c-section b/c of macrosomia. He was only 7 lbs. 13 oz though. Those scans can be off, but I didn't want to take the chance.

My growth scans were pretty much spot on, he was estimated at 5lb 2 and he was born the morning after the scan at 5lb 3 ounces.. however, I had heard of them being quite a way off.

Have they not expressed any kind of concern about babys size and your pelvis? Seeing as your other baby got stuck maybe you could push it a bit more and get some answers from someone about your options.

xxxxxxx

My LO was born early at 36 weeks and weighed 8lb 2oz, I dread to think what she would've weighed if she'd stayed until full term....I had a growth scan too at 34 weeks as I was measuring large and had previous large babies. Don't worry, if they think your baby will be big, they will keep a close eye on you. It'll be fine.

My growth scans all predicted teddy to be a beastie. He was born at 40+1, weighing 6lb 9oz. I wouldn't put too much faith in them tbh

I was told at 32 weeks that Emily was 5lbs 13. Then I was scanned again every two weeks. At 36 weeks I was told she was 7lbs 5. She was delivered at 38 weeks and was 6lbs 14 so mine wasn't really that accurate.

xxoo

Those things always predict big babies but they are always wrong in my experience (well my friends and families experiences)
I wouldn't worry too much. My sisters baby was 9lb8 but he was really small! He must have big bones :haha:

i've had two growth scans. will have to wait and see if they're correct but my consultant basically told me to ignore them  and not worry.

they will keep an eye on you though. what have they said so far? do you see a consultant?

I don't know.. I was told Cadence was 7lbs and she was 9lbs, 2oz and just about FLEW out of my birth canal. Literally about 2 minutes pushing. Just because they are big, doesn't mean a hard birth!

My sister's son got stuck and he was a little over 6lb, had a similar experience with my eldest son who was just under 8lb (small for mine and OHs family) and really short-his head just wouldn't crown and kept disappearing so I narrowly avoided ventouse or forceps but still needed an episiotomy and the mws holding my legs in funny positions to be able to push him out myself. My second eldest was showing on growth scans as off the bottom end of the centiles on the printout and had to have several before he just came onto the little graphs enough for them to be satisfied he hadn't stopped growing properly-yet when he was born he was nearly 10lb and 57cm long with the head circumference of a 3 month old. His last growth scan was at about 36 weeks and he was born at 42 so I don't believe he could have suddenly grown all that much in such a short time. My youngest was predicted to be a big baby (even though my fundal measurements were either matching exactly to dates most of the time) and the midwives said I was at real risk of shoulder dystocia, but he was only a few oz bigger than my eldest and pushed himself out when the mws were out of the room-OH got the shock of his life! xx

I had a scan 4 days before he was born and estimated 8lb... He was 10lb3oz, born naturally with no pain relief 30 mins after arriving at hospital, no stitches. Home less than 3 hours later.

wow thats great  good going and good peace of mind for me.

I have another appointment with the consultant on the 21st and they said they will check my cervix and maybe do a sweep if my cervix is ready. I will be 38+2 then. But even if my cervix is not ready, at least i am with the main consultant who i can ask questions to. I am writing the concerns down when i think of them so i do not forget any.

I have started EPO and RTL today to get things ready. Just one tab of EPO till 37 weeks and then i will have two, maybe even think about inserting one at night.

Thank you so much for your stories. They have helped to ease concerns a little.
Basically the scan can be way off and even if its not, it will be possible to have a 10lb baby.
I will keep you all posted.

My LO was born 5 days after her last growth scan (she had the scan late in the 36th week and was born at 37+3). The tech estimated her weight at 8lb and she weighed 7lb 8oz at birth so it was off slightly but not much. I was given a sweep at 37+1 because she was measuring large, I had GD and had a favorable cervix. I ended up with an emcs because she wouldn't descend/fetal distress. Like you I was terrified of her going full term and when I discussed it with my Dr. we agreed to do an early sweep. Definitely talk to your OB/midwife. I can't imagine what my little butterball would have been if she'd gone to 39-40 weeks. Good luck!

i had growth scans everyweek brooke was measuring small a week before i was induced she was 5.5lb and she was 5.14lbs they where pretty accutare for me.

i was induced early cause off this they said she would be better out than in she was born 11 days early.

I had a scan a week from 25 weeks due to Alex's heart condition. They thought he was going to be over nine pounds, closer to ten and he was 8lbs 3oz. I had a c-section though. Just wanted to post and show you how they can be misleading :flower:

I have 2 different versions of this. With my first son, the OB was convinced he was huge. I ended up having an induction at 38 weeks due to pre-eclampsia. This turned into a c-section and he was only 7 lbs 6 ozs. They were wrong.

With this baby, they estimated he would be over 10 pounds at full term. I developed pre-eclampsia again and had a c-section at 37 weeks. He was
8 lbs 14 ounces, so they were right.

This last baby was so big and laid transverse most of the pregnancy. I was in agony with SPD. Could barely get up from sitting and couldn't sleep lying down. The doctors struggled to remove the baby with a c-section. With all the grunting behind the curtain it was scary. Large blood loss, with 2 transfusions. There is no way that baby could have been born vaginally, letting nature take it's course until 40 weeks. In 3 more weeks no telling how large he would have been but of course I would have been dead from pre-eclampsia. I say this bluntly because I hear "the body won't grow a baby you can't birth." Not true.

At my 36 week growth scan they said she was measuring about 8lbs. 4 weeks later she was born at 8lbs exactly! I reckon they were about 2lbs off!! x
