Since I stopped breastfeeding we have been using the ready made cartons of formula. I have tried several times to switch to powder (obviously its much cheaper) but it just gets clogged up in the teat and she can't get any out. I make it up according to instructions and shake it well, also using fast flow teats  We are now moving up to growing up milk and she still needs it out of a bottle as she's not totally comfortable yet with her sippy cup (unless its got juice in!) I'm using tommee tippee bottles and teats and was wondering if anyone else had the same problem? What am I doing wrong? Is the growing up milk even thicker?

I think growing up milk can be thicker, but, sometimes it needs a good shake in pretty warm water help dissolve?

We found that stirring the bottle rather than shaking helped. It also made Joe have less gas!
Hope that helps x

I found that shaking the bottle when first adding the powder would cause some of the powder to get up into the teat and then be a real pain to mix up with the rest so we started swirling the bottle, then would give it a good shake, but we'll be cutting out the shaking as I've been reading another thread where the girls there said that just swirling or stirring (as Vicks said ) means less wind :D

i've never been able to mix up our powder formula directly in the bottles cuz it always gets stuck in the nipple. you can try to either swirl it or mix it up in a different container and then pour it into the bottle once mixed.

I haven't ever had that happen.
I have Avent bottles which you can get discs for, and although I do not use them for this purpose (just for travel so it doesnt drip) it is what they intended for - discs - they go where the teat goes, so you shake it all up and then add the teat.

Like Lisa said, the sealing discs are brilliant for avoiding this issue but as far as I'm aware, they don't do them for TT CTN?

For our TT bottles, we just swirl the bottle, too. But like the others have said, make sure the water is hot enough to help it dissolve too.

I don't use powder, but if I did I would do the following I think:

Put powder in bottle
measure water out in another bottle
pour into the bottle with the powder in.

This is what I do, just check the bottom of the bottle to make sure that it's fully dissolved and as mentioned in another post, use hot water as it does dissolve better. We use TT CTN bottles and never had this trouble.

The trick to making bottles with powder is having the water hot enough to disolve it.
Also when washing the teats prior to steralising I always put my finer in to force water through the hole thus clearing any blockages that may be there.
I've never had the powder block the teat with any of my 3 children.
