Can anyone shed any light on a natural water birth for a first timer? I've got really good pain threshold (then again, I've never been in labour!) and right now, I'm feeling really relaxed about my pregnancy and so far have had absolutely no complications, the perfect pregnancy apart from a heavy bout of MS between 6 & 10 weeks. Would really love a bit of information if anyone has any, if they have had a water birth? How was it? What medical intervention did you have? Thanks girls x

Not had a waterbirth myself yet, but I keep hoping and praying to try one :haha:

I planned a home waterbirth for my first. I was made to transfer after 18 hours because of ruptured membranes, I now know I didn't have to do that and I am sure that the birth would've been straightforward had I remained at home. I would say absolutely go for it. Do lots and lots of reading if you want to avoid transfer for anything other than a serious reason. I thought I knew enough but I didn't know about my hospital's policy on ruptured membranes so when I was told I had 18 hours to deliver then would have to go in for antibiotics I was devastated but compliant. More fool me! My birth ended up in ventouse delivery and my son was never once distressed nor was there any issue with me except exhaustion (and a failed epi that meant I couldn't push) which I am now sure was down to the interventions and having to be moved to hospital which in itself kind of broke me.

Be an empowered lady! Best of luck. I can't wait to have my home waterbirth this time and it's going to take something very serious indeed to get me out the front door!

I've supported a natural home water birth for a first timer. She had nothing but a few drops of Rescue Remedy and chocolate to get her through it and it was a lovely calm birth :)

The only water births I've seen were at home with no interventions. The hospitals in my area don't do waterbirths, and rarely let you even get into water.

Mmmm chocolate...
I'm going to have to (much nearer the time!) sort a stash of snacky foods to get me through labour. I think chocolate cookies is a good one, the nice ones from Co-op, but some good plain chocolate and some Rescue Remedy are good ideas.

I'm hoping for a homebirth, and this is my first. Midwife is bringing a Pool In a Box thingie, but although I might spend some time in there I think I'd prefer dry land for the actual pushing bit.

OMG now I'm making a list of all my favorite foods I want to make sure we have on hand :)

I want to do a water birth too. I wasn't sure at first but the more I learn I think it's what I want to do.

I have a question for anyone who has: Did you prefer an inflatable tub or a built in tub (like your own or a birth center's). My birth center has both. I was thinking the real tub but the midwife said she prefers the inflatable one, because it's softer. However, you can't deliver the placenta in it, so if you deliver in the hard tub, they can drain and you can stay there.

Which did you do if you had a choice?

Well I've not been in an inflatable one yet but the one at the hospital was hard and uncomfortable as I just wante dto be on my knees the whole labour. I think an inflatable will be way more comfy for that reason.
