High risk - Spina Bifida

ok...thanks strawberrieve....I had the downs test at 12 weeks and that came back as 1:2740 which is good considering im 39 in April. Does anyone know if this would have been tested for when I had the blood tests for downs? Strawberrieve are you talking about the triple test?

i think it is the triple test, i know it should deff test for downs and sb, and i know theres another one but cant remember the name. i think it should have all been together, but double check cause everywheres so diff, i was told that it could only be done at between week 15+1 and week 16. but even still, ur odds at week 12 are fantastic for downs so i dont think u have anything to worry about there. :) x

Hiya, my LO has SB. If you want to talk, feel free to PM me :)

Did you have your scan on Tuesday?? What did they say?

:hugs:

Hi, I just learned that my baby is high risk for spina bifida as well. 1 in 350 were the odds given me. I have seen my baby on ultrasound many times due to bleeding throughout the pregnancy and each time I've seen it wriggling around, moving it's arms and legs freely. I've even felt a few kicks even though it's still early. I have a hard time picturing my baby with deformities or other disabilities. :( Obviously, I love my child no matter what but I certainly don't want bad things for it.

I am going for further testing but don't have dates set yet.

Hi everyone, so we had our scan on tues, and everything turned out fine, sorry its taken a little while to get back in touch.
And to put anyone else at ease (starry night) the doc said that 19 out of 20 women who get called in for an ultrasound go home fine and it was a false alarm. In the past two years they have raised the level so more people are getting brought in to be checked. If only they could have told me that two days before to ease my worry but nevermind. So please dont panic, although i understand how that doesnt help right now. My prayers are with you.

And ....... we found out that were having a little girl, so i'm a happy bunny. xx

Congrats on the happy news and your little princess!

I'm starting to feel calmer about things myself. My OB had told me it was still a low risk but it was higher than he liked for someone my age as I'm still under 30. Still not sure when I'm to go for more tests. I'm calling the office on Monday.

A girl I work with has Spina Bifida and other than some small back pains she has been completely able to do anything. She works with me at Home Depot lifting things and being on her feet all day. You are only at risk so you shouoldnt worry too much but I just wanted to let you know that if your baby does it doesnt always mean something bad.

I was also positive for SB. I went for a level 2 ultrasound and they paid close attention to the head, neck, and spine. I, too was told everything is fine. I have heard that alot of things cause false positives, such as if yor weight is wrong or your date are wrong, or even if you take tylenol. So fingers cross for healthy babies :)

I am so glad of the outcome!! wishing you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy!

So glad your baby is fine  I think they need to emphasize the fact these tests are just a screening to look for the need to look closer, and that almost everyone's baby will be fine when they do the test. I think the stress it puts us under is harmful!

I am so pleased people are getting checked more thoroughly. But the blood test is only a chance and not worth freaking out over. I wish they told you that from the start - it was devestating to learn my son had sb. But at the very least, the more people who are checked, the less people get the nasty surprise at birth.

If anyone is affected by spina bifida I am always happy to help in any way I can. I can put you in touch with people going through the same thing and people who can help.

I hope all the scans come back ok. I just had my 16 week spina bifida scan for my second and it was terrifying. It came back good though - I wish you all the same.
