I have been reading Angelica's threads with interest because she seems to be having the same problems that I am having. Its not very encouraging that it hasn't got much easier for her.

This might make seem a bit dim but could anyone advise me how far into the feed the hindmilk comes through or how I can tell. I have the same problem baby constantly at breast, sore nipples and him never being satisfied. He never sleeps for longer than 30 minutes during the day and is up every hour during the day.

hey hun check out this site https://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/foremilk-hindmilk.html

how old is your baby?

BF babies prior to 6-8 weeks, seem never to be satisfied. PERIOD. Because they aren't! They are growing like crazy, and since breastmilk is so easy to digest, they get hungry all the time. I know that doesn't seem very encouraging, but it does get better after that.

First off, babies just get BETTER at feeding after that. My LO went from taking 70 minutes to eat, to eating in 20, and now she can eat in about 10. That alone is a huge step in getting more personal time.

The fats in your breastmilk are made, and cling to the linings of your production/delivery sinuses (pockets) within your breast. The more you feed the more fats come loose from the lining and are mixed with the milk your baby is drinking. The first rush of milk is already in the pockets behind the nipple so there won't be much milk there, and for the first few minutes, the fats haven't loosened. Babies start getting those satisfying fats about 3 minutes into the feed... the more they feed, teh higher concentration of fats in teh milk, as they release mroe and more into the milk.

If you watch, the milk gets more 'creamy' looking. If you can hand express a few drops, or watch the corner of baby's mouth for any spill over, you can tell when it goes from foremilk (kinda blue like skim milk), to hindmilk (much whiter and creamy looking).

Thank you for your reply Margele, my baby is 12 days old. I am afraid I am clueless about breastfeeding because I didn't think that I would go full term with my baby. My DD's were both preemie babies so I didn't get to breastfeed although one of them did have expressed BM which was very hard going.

Anyway I will read above website, hopefully it will help.

is is difficult for babies to suck the hindmilk??

Not at all. The only inhibitor for them getting the heavy fat hindmilk, is if there was an overproduction of milk. In other words, if they were getting full before getting to the end.

Some babies also get tired before getting to the end. You just have to keep them awake long enough for them to feed :)
