Hip Babies / Hip Dysplasia

Hi!

Jessica is due to go into a Spica Cast after surgery and i have been given information on that fund where they give you £75 towards a suitable carseat. However, before the grant the car seat costs £220 and i still can't afford the £145 to pay so i was thinking of getting a cheaper car seat, with a flat base and arm rests that move to fit her in. i've seen them for £50. We have two cars and would prefer to get one for each car rather than keep moving the seat.

A lady from the STEPS charity has just called me and said that the carseat they recommend has got special padding and longer straps that meet safety standards so now i am thinking should i get the expensive one (even though i dont want to). Surely if the 1-2-3 carseats can fit an 11 year old the straps will be long enough for a spica cast on an 2 year old???

What did you all do?

Thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarah, welcome. The car seat is probably the trickiest thing with the cast. We went with a Britax evolva for DD when she was in the cast... and she didn't fit properly. The problem wasn't the straps as such, but the fact that she cast wasn't in a position that fit the seat. We ended up cutting the 'wings' on the bottom of the seat so she fit around the base. It is near impossible to know what car seat will fit until the cast goes on, and then when the cast is changed it might be a completely different position. Nightmare. The expensive seat is reclined and padded in such a way that the cast is more likely to fit, so if you can afford it then it is the best option. But if not, make the best of what you can. I know others have had the evolva and had it work for them. I think though the more upright 1-2-3 seats wild be harder to fit into. But all this is based on just looks, I didn't try any of them.

Good luck!

thank you,

I think i will have to be patient and wait until she has had the surgery and then buy something with the idea if it doesnt fit then hopefully they will let me return it. i can't leave it until after the surgery as obviously i have to have something to transport her home from hospital in.

brother in law is a chippy and is making me a spica table with the gap to fit in so i've got something to concentrate in the meantime. :)

We got a car set from argos, I think it's this one that we got

This fitted emma grand, but we did have to use some rolled up blankets/thin pillow so that she was in it correctly.
That's great about your brother in law, good luck with everything xxxx

Alias congrats on your baby boy, I'm guessing that his hips are looking good atm? Xx

thanks :) he's a month old this week! When the pediatrician saw him I gave her the full story... she felt a slight click on one side, so arranged an ultrasound that day, another for 6 weeks, and we'll have an Xray at 4 months. She was willing to do all that just based on the family history. The first ultrasound was fine, so we're back next month for the second one. I'm fairly happy that he is ok, but I'm glad they are being extra careful this time.

cause ellie was born without a hip they say that it might not even have made a diff anyway and we have always been told she would maybe need plastic hips til her body stops growing then they would give her a metal one or hip replacement to be honest i havent really looked into it too much and then there is also the test for hemihypertrophy to be done xxx

Hi Claire,
I havent posted in ages as there is so much happening, but i am seeing from your post that Ellie is to be tested for Hemihypertrophy, our wee one has had her bloods taken 2 weeks ago to test for this too.
i havent come across anyone else who may have Hemihypertrophy, and would really like to chat to someone going through similar.
hope you dont mind.

have just realised Eva was 7 months old the last time i posted here, and i was waiting to see the consultant.
Eva is now 17 months old, has been walking properly for 5 weeks, and to cut a long story short, her hips are in their sockets, but my consultant thinks she may have hemihypertrophy.
She had bloods taken 2 weeks ago, and we are awaiting the results!
