Home safety - which items are essential?

Interesting thread. I'll be getting radiator covers x

Thanks for this thread, Ive got to buy all this when i move out!!

LO is trying to open our oven door which is a built in one under the worktop with a (heavy) drop down door - has anyone got one of the stick-on locks to work successfully ? The reviews on Amazon weren't great.......

Any other solutions except for eyes in the back of my head gratefully accepted !

My cousin gave me an Independance Day alien toy. It had a motion sensor so when there was movement in front of it, it made an awful noise and its head opened up. It was ugly and scary.
We put it in a cupboard when my daughter was young and when she opened the cupboard it started. She never opened any of the cupboards because she didnt know which one the monster was in. She never opened cupboards at other peoples houses either.

The only thing iv done to baby proof is put a gate in the kitchen. We keep the dining room door open so she can't get up the stairs. Everything else is the same, I'm in the teach them not to touch camp.

I haven't babyproofed at all, not even a stairgate. I favour the running round after them and saying 'no' approach. I never leave Holly unattended (apart from in her playpen). So far she hasn't had any accidents at all. She fell off the sofa yesterday because she was running round on it, but you can't babyproof a sofa :haha: I am considering getting kitchen cupboard locks though, as she just won't leave them alone.

:haha: Gotta be cruel to be kind sometimes.

Our babyproofing consisted of a room divider/playpen for when LO was unsupervised, cupboard locks and socket covers(The ones that cover the whole thing not the plug in ones).
We also bought two folding stairgates for when we stay at my parents or in self catering.
Oh and make sure your blind cords are safe. There is a big push at the moment to make sure people know the risks of dangling cords that could strangle a child.
Other than that we explain where she has to stand to be safe when we open the oven.
Every time we get to our garden gate we stop and look for cars (even though it is the quietest lane)in the hope that if she ever 'escaped' my hand she would stop out of habit. Sorry, gone a bit off topic there!.

we didnt baby proof our house at all with amelie and probably wont this time either. We have a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm but we'd have that with or without kids.

Thats interesting. I think its a valid way to treat safety as you have to go with how you feel about risk. Did you look at the dangers and then decide what to do or not to do, or did you not research and just go by your instincts.
