Hospital vs home birth?

i was watching the matthew wright show where they discussed this and they read a statistic that babies are 50% more likely to die in a home birth than hospital...obviously the figures of birth deaths are still small overall, but home birth appears to double the risk...afraid i'm only repeating the statistic they quoted and not sure where it's from

i know home birth can be relaxing and so on for many, but for me i was glad to birth in hospital both times and if i had another (god forbid since emily was 9lb 15oz!) i would choose hospital again

IMO increasing home births is a positive move providing it's the woman's own choice and not one she's pushed into by health peeps (midwives tried to convince me to birth at home for emily but i'm firm and stubborn about a lot of things and was clear this was not for me)

I understand your only the messenger, but I think that 50% statistic is completely unjustified...love to know where they got it from. Especially since midwives bring the same resus equipment that they would have at a hospital, with ambulance on stand by...

just looked on website and its on 14th july episode...just viewing clip to see if they stated source

concidering how main interventions are reduced by having a homebirth i really do fail to see where this 50% more likly to die came from...i think its total BS

Hospital birth for me. I wanted to do the halfway thing and have a waterbirth in a midwife led unit (this is my first) but unfortunately the way my pregnancy has gone means I now have no choice for anything but a hospital birth, not a waterbirth :( but as long as he's safe I'm sure I won't mind.

thanks for the link but i dont think id be able to watch it without raising my blood pressure hahaha that man gets on my nerves at the best of times lol

I simply do not believe that statistic. As far as I recall the evidence goes the other way around as the data is disputed because more complicated births tend to be in hospital therefore are more likely to have an adverse outcome. Perhaps they were confusing unassisted birth with homebirth.

I wonder if it comes from that biased US research...?

haha! all i can say is make sure you know how many levels there are! i thought it went up to 5 so i laboured on max of no. 3 thinking i'd save 5 for when i was near the end...when i got to hospital i was 9cm, ended up taking it off soon after and then chatted to my OH and he asked why i hadn't put it on very high...apparently it goes up to level 15 or something! :dohh: what a prat i am!!! :dohh:

boost button for every contraction = close to heaven

I am SO excited. I found a place here rents TENS!!! These are not very common in the US at ALL. The only reason I know about them is because of this board.

samantha675 - good move  some people don't agree with them...i had a different tens with isabel and it was rubbish, i wasn't gonna bother with emily but changed my mind at last min and went for a different one and was really pleased and grateful to have it...definately made life more bearable!

when i bought mine my mum was bitching saying oh why have u wasted ur money i tried one and it was sh*t. her youngest is 16 so i think things have moved on since then hahaha

my mums very much for hospital and epidural straight away kinda woman, even tho out of 4 shes only had 1, that didnt even work completly (she still loved it tho haha)and the other times docs messed up

I did the same thing, sort of! The midwife took my TENS off when it came to pushing, and I remember looking down at it and realising I had forgot to keep turning it up (I think I was at six out of ten). Would've helped if the stupid cows were paying attention to me (even though they were in the room the whole time) enough to see if it could be turned up more when my contractions were on top of one another and they didn't want me out of bed. Oooh, I bet they thought I was bossy with how I wanted my labour to go then...just wait until next time!
