Hospital wanting to 'speed things along'?

Hi ladies! I am (hopefully) only days away from giving birth and getting nervous about being pushed into speedy along my delivery by the hospital.

I was recently offered induction which was supposed to be done today, which I refused. I am 3cm, 80% effaced on my own and feel that my body is doing what it need to without help. I have spent alot of time thinking about what I want and I would like to be a natural birth with a go at no pain medications and giving myself time to labor on my own.

I am worried however that they want the bed for the next patient and won't give me the time I need to do this on my own.

Has anyone dealt with this or had confrontations with staff or feeling a sense of impatience?

Just wondering how you handled it all! Thank you!:hugs:

Is there any option of you going home? I ended up having my waters broken last time when I was in early labour, and LO got distressed very quickly and I had an EMCS. In your position, I would most definitely wait it out. If you're not in established labour, tbh you'd be better off at home. Especially as you're not overdue yet. You could walk around at 3cm and 80% effaced for another week or two (sorry to say).

If going home isn't an option, then just know that you're probably going to be pushed harder and harder to let them intervene. Be prepared to say no to alot of people!

Hope all goes well :) good luck

Thanks! I was 2cm for two weeks before so the 3cm nowisn't giving me much hope lol. After refusing my induction today (was just checked yesteday) my OB's office called and wants to see me again tomorrow...

I laughed and as a joke asked "Am I in trouble?" (because I refused my induction) lol, they laughed and said no but I wonder why she wants to see me again after just seeing me yesterday???

You're not even due yet. If you have no medical reason to have the baby early, then there is no reason for "speeding things up". And that is actually not a good reason for induction. Inductions are only suppose to be used in a medical reason, like pre-eclampsia for example, not becuase the Doctor is impatient.

Hopefully it's just to check you're doing ok :) if you're healthy and baby is too, then wait for nature to take its course. Much better to let your body labour naturally if you can.

wow induction before 40 weeks - not sure they would offer that here in the UK unless there was a significant medical reason. Mine was booked for 41 + 5 and even then I wasn't happy. I got to 3cm by 41 weeks and wasn't in labour. However I did have a sweep at 41 + 3 and that started me off naturally with no induction needed. I'm afraid I haven't experienced a hospital birth (went to a birthing centre) but like the others have said, prepare to stand your ground!!
Good luck

I had my first in the US, and was committed to a natural birth (in a hospital with an OB). My OB was not very supportive. He wanted to induce at 39+6 (no medical reason). I said no. Over the next 11 days I had 3 OB appointments, 3 non-stress tests and 2 ultrasounds. He kept pushing to induce, so I finally agreed to be scheduled for induction at 41+5. Thankfully I went into labour naturally at 41+4.

My water broke at home, and I called the hospital at 5am to let them know I'd be coming in. By 9am they were calling me pressuring me to come in right away, even though I was managing well at home.

At the hospital I was 5cm, but didn't progress for 3 hours. My OB told me if i didn't progress in the next 2 hours he was going to have to give me pitocin.

So yeah, I was continually threatened with intervention, my OB even used the 'if you were my wife' line. There was no medical reason for any of the interventions proposed.

At the hospital I had a doula and my husband deal with all the nurses and doctors. I had asked in my birth plan that they don't talk to me directly, so I could concentrate on my labour. This helped me stick to my plan, and I had my natural birth, after 12.5 hours of labour. I would just make sure you have someone there on your side, and stick to your guns (if there's no medical problems)

Hope that helps, and good luck!
Jenn
