Housing Benefit

I hate having to rely on benefits to get a place, but Dan's been fired and well, although he's trying his hardest to find employment, it doesn't look like he'll suceed between now and the moving date. Does anyone know if families under 25 can claim housing benefit? Anyone under 25 claiming it know how much they can pay for a 2 bed apartment? I know it differs for different circumstances, but I just don't know how we're going to pay the rent if it turns out we're not entitled.

i dont know much about the couple but ive had advice as a single person when LO comes i will get £103 a week towards rent. and ill be in a 2/3 bedroom house

I am 19 and I am only just going to start recieving my (backdated) payments on 11th May. I applied in Feb! I get £480ish for my £500 a month 2 bed house. But I am a single parent. Not sure how much couples get. Although if he is not working he can claim income support. The amount of HB is more if they know you are also claiming that. If you are going to claim I would do it soon as as it can take forever like mine did! I hate having to rely on benefits too but sometimes we need to and that's what they're there for :)

My partner works i dont but we are both under 25 and we get £155 PCM off our rent because he works, but if you on all benefits they should pay the lot.. im sure theres alink online somewhere via diectgov

Thanks girls :) going to apply as soon as we find out the moving date, got the paperwork all here. I'm on income support at the moment and should still be able to get it (registered disabled). Hopefully he gets himself a job soon, at least if we can claim HB it'll take the pressure off him a bit. He gets so stressed :(

Hope this helps hun

depends if your going private or council, if your going private then you dont get housing benefit you get LHA

i emailed them in april asking about a 3 bedroomed property and what will i be entitled to etc this was the reply

Thank you for your e-mail of 27 April 2009.

If you move into private rented accommodation the Local Housing Allowance
(LHA) rules will apply when working out your Housing Benefit. Under these
rules the level of rent we can use to work out benefit depends on the rent
you pay and the size of property you need.

At the moment you need a two bedroom property and the weekly LHA rate for
this from 1 May for most of Manchester is £115.38. This means that if your
rent is more than £115.38, we will use this amount to work out your
benefit. If you rent is below £115.38, we will use your full rent, plus up
to a maximum of £15 in excess of this to work out your benefit. Once your
third child is born, you will need a 3 bedroom property and the LHA rate
for this from 1 May is £126.92.

Note: the LHA rates are reviewed monthly so are subject to variation
(thought the rate applied last for up to 12 months) and under the LHA rules
payment of benefit is usually made to person claiming.

i know it goes off your area so youd be best off emailing/phoning them then you can work out what property to go for.

:hugs:

be prepaired for a wait though. I dont know what I get as its been 3 months and they suspended mine till they decide what to pay, so I could be out on my ass if my landlord noticed he isnt being paid from them. he hasnt called yet but I never actually met the guy. I privately rent. No houses left over here. They usually take 3 months to decide anything here.

I'm on housing benefit & it defo depends on your area/council , I'm with a local housing association as our council don't do houses anymore.
For a standard 2 bed where i am its 1 living room & 2 bedrooms ( fair small house basically ) & the max rent they will pay is far as i know £90 ish p/wk , Any 2 bed house over that i would have to pay the difference. That will remain the case until i have 2 children where i will then be allowed i think an extra £40 a week towards rent. So i could have a house upto around £130 2 or 3 bed & they will pay the full amount, if you are both not working you will get it all paid . If he works he will then have to pay the rent depending on his wage though they will work out if its all the rent or partial.

HTH alittle x
