Hiya,

I'm currently recieveing housing benefits, I'm moving to a house in april and my dad is under the impression that it doesn't go up when baby is born? Is he right? Xx

If you are not working, your local council should cover the whole cost of the rent and council tax.

It depends on whether the house is council/ Houing association or private and your income.
If private renting you would have to check your local housing allowance (LHA) usually found on your local councils website. The LHA gives you a fixed amount depending on the number of rooms you are entitled to. If rent is higher than the LHA you would have to pay the difference.
If you are under 25 you get less money too.

Any benefit would be subject to the max £400 a week cap coming in in April also so if you went to a property (regardless of size) which costs more than this you would have to top up the difference. I am not sure if a baby 'requires' a second bedroom under housing allowance until they are older.

Good luck :)

Ours went up when i had our lil boy, hes 3 weeks old , i went into our local housing office, showed his birth cerficate for them to update my details and they sent us a letter a few days ago with the new amount of housing benefit they will now pay us. Here where i am from it was 80.77 a week before my lil one was born now they are paying 103.87 a week to us. Best to go into your local housing office or ring them up and ask them, all u have to do is show them proof your baby has been born and they should up your housing benefit x
