How long does it take pregnancy test to turn negative?

I lost my baby today at 6 weeks. I'm devastated, but we are trying our best to look forward to the future and trying again. I took an FRER just to see how it would look, and it's still VERY positive. The control line is actually lighter than the test line. How long does it typically take for levels to fall and for ovulation to occur?

First, my condolences on your loss. :( It's hard to go through.

It can vary really widely from woman to woman. The duration of the pregnancy plays a part, too, because that dictates how high your hcg levels are. My doctor said that 2 weeks is standard, but up to 4 isn't unheard of. I'm still testing positive 4 weeks from my D&C (which was 5.5-6 weeks from my MC, ugh), but I was estimated at 10-12 weeks at the time of my MC.

As for when you can expect your cycle to resume normally, that has a HUGE range on it. Some women ovulate within weeks, but my doctor said it can sometimes take as long as 6 months.

I completely understand wanting to get right back in the saddle, so fingers crossed that your body goes back to normal quickly!

So sorry for your losses Sil and Dill. :(
I lost my baby last week @ 14 weeks along.
We too are hoping to try again as soon as possible.
I haven't tested yet to see if my hcg is down, I plan to wait until I stop bleeding. I'm assuming it won't be down until sometime after that. :/

Sil, I hope it goes quickly for you, and you are able to conceive again soon.

Dill, do you plan to ttc again ?

Sorry for your loss. I just learned I was miscarrying a couple of days ago. When I did a test at the doctor it came up negative. I was 5w2d.

I'm sorry for your loss. :hugs: You're not alone! I had a D&C two weeks ago due to a eight week MMC. Took a HPT today and it was negative. I was really nervous it would still be positive...I've never been so happy about a bfn! Now I know my body can move on. I can't wait for AF to show her beautiful face. I bought a two HPT pack so hopefully the other one will be a bfp in the near future. :winkwink:

tcinks, yes, we are ttc again, although I suspect my hcg is still too high to have ovulated. Monday's hpt was positive. I am going in for a follow-up hcg count today, and should know the results by Friday. I haven't had AF yet. But in the meantime, there's always practice, practice, practice! ;) Given that I managed to have a fertilized double-ovulation with an IUD in, I am hopeful that it'll happen for us quickly.

I've had many losses and typically it's taken 2-3 weeks after a loss (all 7-9 weeks) for my hCG to go back to 0. But I've had one loss where my hpts were negative at 9 days post miscarriage too. It's different for everyone but I'm guessing you could try retesting in about a week to see what the lines are doing. What I usually do is wait a week, test again, and if the lines are lighter, test again in a few days. If the lines are still fairly dark, I wait a week before retesting.

I had a positive 23 days D &C and I called my doctor thinking it was abnormal. They decided to draw my HCG level and it came back at 12. I got AF the next day. It just varies so much for everyone. But at 2.5 weeks post-D&C, I had a very dark positive also.

Thanks so much ladies! I had my blood done on the day I miscarried (1800) and two days later (450) but my obgyn does not want to draw blood again so I am taking pregnancy tests to see if my levels drop. I took a test today (6 days post miscarriage) and it is still positive. I suppose I'll try again in a few days

Mine doesn't want to stop drawing blood! My most recent draw, 4 weeks post D&C, still came up positive at an hcg count of 69. I'm scheduled for another draw on the 5th. I guess some bodies are stubborn.

Ladies, looking for insight. It's been 12 days and I'm still bleeding steadily. I passed some tissue earlier today, which I'd never noticed before. My midwife did some tests and I don't have any sign of infection so she isn't worried. I'm just ready for it to stop! I know there isn't a "normal", but Jud wondering what your experiences have been.

Both times for me it took 2 weeks for BFN on HPT.

On both occasions my 27 day cycle resumed straight away, though I didn't ovulate on the MC cycle, but the next month I ovulated as normal, both times.

My body recovered from the MC (7 wks/9 wks) much more quickly than my mind:cry:

Thanks for your response! I tested again this morning and still very positive. Ugh. But I'm trying not to get down about it. I've been taking raspberry leaf which is supposed to help tone the uterus and get everything out so hopefully that works. Day 13 now so I'm ready for this to be over. Trying to be patient. :)

Doesn't it feel weird peeing on a stick and begging for a negative? Feeling disappointed when that line pops up? It's so backwards. I am on day 9 now post miscarriage and still a BFP. Hang in there ladies

Hey everyone, I had my first pregnancy (hooray!) and then my first MMC and D&C () last month. I took my first HPT around 4 weeks and it was negative. Hopefully it goes back quickly for you! And I comlpetely agree, after trying and hoping so bad for that BFP, it seems so wrong to want a BFN.

My bleeding stopped 7 days post miscarriage. I am now 13 days post miscarriage and still bfp!! It's definitely fading in color but I just want the line to be gone so we can move forward and try again. It's hard not knowing what's going on with your body.

With one of my miscarriages this year (8w passed naturally) I started off at a similar number to yours and I was negative in about 3 weeks. My two D&C miscarriages took a longer 4-6w but my numbers were 57,000/82,000. I find it drops really quick at first, then the last 50 takes a little while to clear back to less than 1. For me, AF usually comes when I'm near negative.
:hug:The waiting is torture, I hope you get your bfn soon xx

I couldn't wait for my next hcg test (it's next Wednesday, and I'll have results Friday) so I did an at-home test. Was very frustrated to find that the "pregnant" line was every bit as pink as the last test on Oct. 20. No fading at all! Nearly 11 weeks post-MC and 5.5 weeks post-D&C and I am STILL testing positive. I swear, I am going to have a breakdown if my hcg test doesn't show a significant drop.

So sorry Dill. That must be so frustrating. :( Did your doctor give any indication as to why it's taking so long? Is it possible there's still tissue left behind? That's what mine said, and gave me some medicine to try to expel it. Nothing happening so far. :/ My hcg is at 500 last I checked, hoping this last push gets it way down. I had no idea this process could take so long.

tcinks, I just keep getting told that it sometimes takes longer than expected, and to be patient and keep coming back for blood tests. If I'm still not dropping VERY close to 0 by this Wednesday, I am going to ask for some answers. They tried the "well, give it time" thing with my m/c until I finally put my foot down about bleeding for a month and a half straight. :growlmad:

Good luck with the medication! I hope it does the trick for you so you can just get it done with!
