I have just returned from the hosp with my 2 day old baby. How often and how much in mls do I give her in each sitting? Is there a chart somewhere that shows how much for each day old? Thanks. X

theres a chart on the back of the milk ? start at 3oz every 3-4hr she will leave or take enough for herself x

found this

So if your baby weighs 6 pounds, you'll give him about 15 ounces of formula in a 24-hour period. If he weighs 10 pounds, he should drink about 25 ounces in a 24-hour period.

but some do have more / less x

at that stage my new born was drinking 60mls or 2 oz in each feed. It also depends on the size of your baby mine was 6lbs so she could only hold so much in her tiny tummy. You will notice how much she takes in at each feed as there will be a pattern.

yeh see mine was nearly 9lb :/ mine only ever went 3hr aswell

Basically love you should let her have as much as she wants to drink. Fran was on about 3oz every 3-4hrs from birth - so 6 bottles a day. She went up to 4oz at 1 week old and 5oz at 3 weeks old.

Rule of thumb is when they start finishing a bottle every feed to start making up an extra oz.

You can't overfeed her hun and it's best to just feed on demand - if you try and regulate her milk intake you will probably find she gets hungrier sooner so just give her as much as she wants. Some babies feed every couple of hours to start with and others every 3 or 4. Then there are growth spurts where they might want bigger bottles or feeds more often and quite likely both at the same time!

I've been feeding my baby 3 ounces every 3 hours and it seems to be enough for him at the moment, although sometimes he will only drink 2 ounces. He was 6lbs 2oz when born - now 6lbs 12oz x

Thanks guys this has been a lifeline, im in such a panic as what is right to give her, she was only 6lb, at the hosp I gave her 70mls and she projectile vomited, the midwives laughed at how much I fed her, its all so confusing to me right now. she seems to wake ever 2hrs and cries for a feed. X

Every baby is different hun,my newborn took 5oz every feed from the first night xx

The midwives laughed? That's awful!

I always found it best to just feed on demand and let Fran have as much as she wanted. Usually she went 3-4hrs between a feed but during a growth spurt she could go as little as 1.5-2hrs and want an oz or 2 more each bottle as well but then it settled back down to normal after a few days.

You can't overfeed her hun, she will just spit up any excess xx

To be honest,i don't follow the guidlines on the back as its never been correct for my two. I would personally make 3oz,see how much your LO drinks and that will give you a rough guide. If drinking it all then you know you can make 4oz the next time. I only drinking less than 2oz you could make just the 2oz with the next bottle iykwim?
Each baby is different, weigh different, and will drink different amounts. Your baby will tell you how much they want.

They say 3ozs every 3-4 hours. My little lady would only take 2ozs though until she was 4 weeks so I just fed her every 2 hours instead. It's a bit hit and miss just feed her on demand when she's so little. I'd make 3ozs in a bottle and let her take as much as she wants. Congrats on your baby X

I agree :)

Neither of my kids have ever taken the recommended amount even though they were both 8 pounds 10 ounces at birth.

Rhys took 1-2 ounces every 2-3 hours for the first few weeks of his life before he finally moved up to 2-3 ounces every 2-3 hours.

I agree go with what your baby wants i would make up 3oz bottels and see how that gose if baby finshes the 3oz make a 4oz and so on.

My kids have never followed what they are "ment" to have. Jaden is on 3oz bottels now but some times will only take an oz then outher times the full 3 but not much. As long as you are getting plenty of wet nappies they are fine.

in our experience it completely depends on the baby and their appetite
our wee girl was only drinking 50mls each feed and at one month she was barely taking 70ml, she is only know and two months taking 100mls each feed but she is sleeping longer :happydance:
there is usually a chart on the back of the formula tin which tells you what amount you "Should" give your baby for their age, but its a rough guide only and all babies differ in appetite and size

At two days old her tummy is about the size of a marble so she may want feeding little and often, an oz or two every few hours is normal.
