How many of you make up formula in the recommended way??

I sterilise the 6 bottles for the next 24 hours in the morning, boil the kettle, put the boiling water in and leave to cool, put the right amount of powder to ounces in and then put them in the fridge and heat up slightly when she needs one.

I'm a horrible mommy. We wash the bottles in hot soapy water, but don't boil them or use a sterilizer.

We also don't boil water. Once a day my OH makes up bottles with 8 oz of water, and they go in the fridge. Then when needed we add the powder and shake. I think I may start leaving them at room temp however because the powder tends to dissolve better.

Tbh, my pediatrician told us that boiling the water wasn't necessary and that bottles don't really need to be sterilized, just washed thoroughly. Mika is healthy, and this is how my bottles and my brother and sisters bottles and everyone I knows baby's bottles have been made up and everyone is just fine!

I don't think things really need to be completely sterile for a baby, a few germs are good for them! Obv. not getting sick, lol.

BlondeNKlutzi you are not a bad mommy. I don't sterilze either. Just hot soapy water. I don't boil water either. I make bottles of water at room temp, and add powder when needed.

It seems the norm to not worry about sterilising or boiling the water outside of the UK, it's similar in Europe to, we in the UK seem to have such strict guidelines about it as opposed to everywhere else. No idea why. As many non UK posters say, it does their babies no harm and to be honest I think babies need a little exposure to a bit of bacteria - builds the old immune system!! Having said that I do follow the UK guidelines but my GCSE science tells me there is really no need to make up each feed as you go along. As long as you add the powder to water 70+ to kill any bugs in the powder, use a sterilised bottle, cool them really quickly (as bacteria grows fastest at 65-5 degrees ish) then refrigerate straight away and keep below 5 degrees and use within 24 hours the chances of any bacteria surviving or multiplying enough to make a baby ill are virtually non existent. After all, cartons of open formula are fine in the fridge for 24 hours! So I wouldn't worry X

I make up the days feeds in the morning as per tin instructions, cool and stash in the fridge, who is honestly going to wait 30 mins when you have a screaming hungry baby?

Thanks Bubbles I was just wandering about those temperatures :flower::flower:

I just used filtered water - I didn't bother to boil water.
Also I gave my boy his bottles cold or at room temp - I didn't heat them. He was fine with it and it made it so much more convenient when we were out.

We make up his bottles as we need them so in the recommended way. If we're out, I put together a sterilised bottle and take a carton with me, he'll take it as room temperature, or if we're round at someone's house, I'll pop the bottle in a little hot water so it's slightly warm.

I make up the bottles with cool boiled water then heat the water when needed and then add the formula, if out and about use the tommee tippee milk storage tubs and the tommee tippee flask to heat the milk, Sophie has to have hers warm otherwise she gets terrible colic/wind that evening xx

Hey,
I just make up my bottles with the boiling water for the day and then add the formula when my little one is wanting fed. Seems happy enough with room temp aswell!
And the cartons for out and about are great, not had any problems with them.

It's not practical to make them like the carton says all the time! I make a batch in the morning and a night one in the evening and store it in the fridge til I need it!

I can't use ready mixed cartons as they don't do soya ones! grrr. So have to take out a ready mixed bottle in a cold bag with ice block and heat it up in one of those flask thingys when we need it!

i make four up at a time leave kettle for 30 mins then add powder then cool then into fridge. you used to be able to do this a few years ago and a friend of mine little boy was in hospital and they made 24 hours worth of bottles for him and kept in the fridge!! x

SMA Staydown must be put into cold water - heat makes it lump up.

They told me in the hospital that having to boil water first is a myth! So I've never done it. And I now have a healthy toddler. :-)

i make up 6 bottles in the morning including the formula, (as ive found the the c&g comfort doesnt mix properly with cold water.) then just warm in a cup of hot water to take the cold edge off when he's hungry

D'oh! I made a mistake when I wrote this. Didn't realize we're from so many different places here. The doctors told me that if you live anywhere in the USA, then the tap water is fine for baby -- no need to boil -- it's a myth. But tap water may be very different in different countries, so probably bad advice, depending what nation you call home. Sorry 'bout that!

I make them the recommended way (boiled water, left for 30 mins then formula added etc). I make 3 at a time and put them in the fridge for no more than 24 hrs (they never last nearly that long!)

I use cartons when out and about and for the night feed (our kitchen is in the basement and it's a long way at 5am so we have a stash of cartons and a bottle warmer upstairs).

Rebecca wont take cartons at room temperature though - it's still too cold for her.

I don't, the midwives in hospital said I 'should' make them up as needed, but they know noone does, so just make sure you keep premade bottles at the back of the fridge and don't keep them more than 24 hours, which is what I do :)
