Hi.

How many ounces in total should a 3 month old be drinking over a 24 hour period (going by rough guidelines). Just trying to workout if my boy is drinking too little as I think he is!

In the first four to six months when your baby isn't eating any solids, here's a simple rule of thumb: Offer 2.5 ounces of formula per pound of body weight each day. For example, if your baby weighs 6 pounds, you'll give him about 15 ounces of formula in a 24-hour period.

I'm being thick - I can't work that out.
He's about 12lb

30ozs.

I think the rule stops applying when you get to 32ozs as then (hopefully) it should be nearer to weaning age and you can start to add food.

My girl is a NIGHTMARE when it comes to feeding so probably not the best example but she normally has anywhere between 21 - 30oz in little bits at a time! Her weight gain is fine.

Oh dear, my little girl is 6 weeks tomorrow, weighs 11lb 11oz and has on average 31oz a day but upto 37oz. She really is a little piglet!

I'm having same issue! My little boy is drinking 4-5 oz every 3.5-4 hours. On average he is drinking a total of 20-24 per day (ish) between 7pm. And I'm pretty sure this is why he isn't sleeping through the night, as when he wakes at first feed in night he will take 4oz if I'm lucky but after that he onlywants 1-2oz at his next wake up, and same for one after that, he's pretty much just grazing during night.

His weight gain is okay although under his centime at last weigh in due to a week of diarrhea from a milk change.

This is today's feeding, I recorded it.

4oz @ 7am
6oz @ 10:40am
5oz @ 2:15pm
6oz @ 6:00pm
3oz @ 7:00pm (he alway has this feed at night just before bed, he even roots for it, he is formula fed but likes this top up feed before bed)

My little boy is 2 weeks older than yours he was taking 26-28oz a day but i switched back from comfort milk to normal milk a Cpl weeks ago, he did slow down a lot at first while he got used to the normal milk again, and dropped down to around 20oz a day, but today hes had a good day

5oz - 6.40am
3oz - 9am ( always has this before his morn nap)
5oz - midday
5oz - 3pm
4oz - 6pm
5oz - 7.45

tomorrow im going to offer 6oz feeds, so he may drop one of the little feeds x

I've tried offering bigger feeds but he point blank refuses more than 6oz, and 90% of the time he will drink 5oz and no more

Babies are funny little creatures!

youre lucky he has 5oz it takes me sometimes an hour to get her to have 3oz these days! U may be right about sleeping through... Ive noticed that if she has closer to 30oz she sleeps through but if she has less she wakes up. Shes only had 20oz today.. im in for a bad night :)

It goes on weight of the baby rather than age. Somewhere 120ml/kg -150ml/kg is the ball park for milk in a 24 hour period x

What makes you think he's eating too little? I don't know much (anything) about FF - but do you always have to record it like that? Don't babies really differ in how much they need? Not meaning to sounds ignorant, but mine are all BF and I haven't the slightest clue how much any of them ate in a day but I do know they all had (have) very different appetites.

Sun - you don't have to record it but I have been so that I can see how much and what sort of routine he has as I try and work rous him as a pose to making him work round me.
I think he is drinking too little as I'm pretty sure he is capable of sleeping through the night as when he wakes, he is only grazing. He won't go down without a feed but won't drink more than 1-2oz.

As a rule of thumb they say babies should drink all their nutritional needs between 7am and 7pm, dream feed (or even an awake feed if baby wakes) at 11pm, and then baby should sleep right through until anywhere between 5-7am because they have had all they need to eat during day. If baby still continues to wake during night then it's for other reasons or that they haven't drink the "guideline" amount.

For example, my baby Jacob is drinking 20-24 at most a day, and going by what the paediatricians say, he should be drinking 30oz approx.

I'm having same issue! My little boy is drinking 4-5 oz every 3.5-4 hours. On average he is drinking a total of 20-24 per day (ish) between 7pm. His weight gain is okay although under his centime at last weigh in due to a week of diarrhea from a milk change.

I thought my LO wasn't sleeping through because he wasn't eating enough during the day but this week he's guzzled between 30oz and 36oz a day and still hasn't slept through unfortunately!

Well that's my theory out the window then lol! Mind you I won't know if it works for me until he drinks his "guideline" amount

I think I just have a greedy one on my hands - Jacob may well be different :) We've only been fully ff for a couple of weeks but he's definitely increased the amount he takes at each feed. It's not always consistent but sometimes he takes 7 or even 8oz now. Because I now know what he's had (whereas like a pp, when I was combi feeding I didn't have a clue) I'm trying to distract him a little if he starts looking hungry after a couple of hours (provided I know he had a good feed before that) so he'll go a little longer and take a little more. He's a natural grazer so some days I'd been feeding him 3 or 4oz every 2 hours which makes is difficult to get anything else done!

Yeah I used to find the same, Jacob would graze anywhere between 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and it would be anything from 1-4oz. We definitely have a better routine now of 4-6 every 3-4 hours. I finally don't feel like all I do all day long is feed him!

When ds was 3months he was drinking between 35-40oz per day!!! But this settled down when at 3 and a half months his formula got swapped to nutramigen for lactose intolerance. Since he has 20-27oz per day. This didnt change once we started weaning either. Still the same.
I think he was over eating before as the lactose intolerance was causing bowel problems and awful silent reflux which of course ment he was trying to soothe his throat :( xx
