How many oz of formula should a 4 month old or 16lb-17lb baby be having in 24 hrs?

Is there a guide anywhere. I've started giving my LO baby rice, porridge and fruit & veg purees, but always give the milk first. Now he's taking less formula, is this normal.

Before he was having 6 bottles in 24 hrs and about 5-7 oz a time. min 30oz max 42oz
Now he has 5 sometimes 6 bottles and only takes about 4 oz a time in the day and a 6-7 oz in the early morning? min 22oz max 27oz.

Is this what happens when you start to give your baby solids?

(I have discussed weaning with my HV and she said what i am giving LO is fine as he is a big baby, so don't want to know about whether or not i should be weaning at 4 months, i just want to know if it is normal for LO's to take less milk, thank you.)

Omar was 17 lbs at 4 months. He was on 4 bottles 6 oz each. He was on 24 oz in 24 hours. He wasnt on solids yet. We tried weaning at 20 weeks due to reflux but it didn't work as he dropped his milk intake to 12 oz in 24 hours so we had to stop weaning & start again at almost 7 months.

I think the min is 24-28 oz at 4 months xx

My LO has four bottles of 6oz, occasionally he will have a 7oz bottle. We haven't started weaning yet, he still seems satisfied with his milk :) x

Lol mine is 1 month old and having around 6 bottles of 6oz a day xx

Aww yeah mine was the same at that age too hun. Then he went thru stages of having 7-8oz sometimes, then back down again.

Alice is just over 13lbs and has 4-5oz bottles and has been having since she was about 2 months old :)

We have just upped our LO's bottles from 7oz to 8oz as he wasn't quite satisfied anymore. We have also this week tried him with a few spoonfuls of baby rice or purée once a day, he has been taking full bottles as well as the solids but did fall asleep after 6oz of his bedtime bottle tonight!

Oliver is 4 months,16lb and takes 5 7oz bottles a day. Haven't started weaning yet though x

Well we managed to get 30oz into LO today, so i'm quite pleased with that.

I will consider not giving LO any dinner until a later date if he continues to take too little milk, and will also look at the porridge intake as well if needed and stop that if we have to until LO is taking more milk.
The baby rice seems to go down fairly well and really helps him to sleep good like how he used to do so i would stick with that just the same for now.

Mines around 15 lbs and has 5 x 7oz bottles in 24 hours

I believe the goal is to get 24oz. in them a day, although I think I've heard even 21 oz. a day with solids is fine. DS has cut his bottles way down....used to drink 33-35oz. at 3.5 months and since 6 months we've been down to around 20-24oz and the Dr. doesn't seem concerned. We started weaning at 18 weeks. If you're worried, you can always sneak milk into their solids...for example, use in their oatmeal/rice and if you're making your own purees, use milk/formula instead of water. That counts too. xx

my lo is nearly 5mths on breakfast and lunch still has 5 x 6ozs bottles a day but she often drinks only 5oz after breakfast and lunch

My first LO never EVER took any more than 24/25oz per day - and that was right up to 6 months. That was the amount before weaning. That was more than enough for her.

Around 4 months old it was 5 bottles of 5 oz or 4 bottles of 6 oz max:flower:

Hi Natasha,

Can I just ask what you are giving your LO solids wise? Are you giving him porridge in the morning, fruit / veg at lunch and rice in the eve? I'm just curious, as I can't for the life of me remember what I gave to DS1 when we started weaning and i'm begining to think about it for DS2 :D

Thank you :flower:

Also - re: his milk intake, remember that you are giving him milk with his solids (the rice / porridge i'm assuming you make with milk?) so that counts towards his total intake I think!

x

ETA - Forgot to say, my son is on about 30oz of milk a day - not sure what the amount should be though.

Hi LO's routine for food goes kind of like this.

5am - bottle
9am - bottle first & then about 5 spoonfuls of porridge & add about 1 spoon of fruit puree to porridge
12-12.30pm - bottle
3.00-3.30pm - bottle first & then some dinner (purree'd veg/chicken) - LO not really keen on savory yet but i just keep offering it still lol. Up to 5 spoonfuls - sometimes he only has one.
6pm - bottle
8pm - bottle first & then about 5 spoonfuls of baby rice.

Buzz hasn't been weighed in a while - but I'm guessing he's about 15-16lbs now. We started him on purees at 17 wks (he's 19 wks today) and since then his bottle intake has definitely gone down. (I actually started a thread about it yesterday.)

I only feed him one time a day - but am seriously considering feeding him two or three times a day (and mixing formula into the puree just to make sure he's getting his nutrients.)

We offer him 30oz in 5 bottles - but lately he's only been taking about 18-22oz of it in a day - depending on his mood.

Well i 'think' i was maybe offering him a bottle too early as he used to feed roughly every 3 hrs during the day. But as he is getting some food now i think he can go slightly longer. So today i waited until i could definitely tell he was hungry, which happened to be 3 and a half hrs (instead of 3) and he took 7oz. :happydance: So maybe try waiting abit longer and see if your LO takes more too?
