I'm going to be going for my first Iui this coming month and I wanted to know typically how many scans you go for in order to track the follicle size? I would be getting the trigger shot for ovulation. Also do you typically inject yourself or go into the office for the shot? Thanks in advance for your help...

I didn't have a trigger shot, natural ovulation in conjunction with Clomid and I didn't have any scans.. some of the other ladies will probably give you some better answers! :)

I was lucky and only needed 2 scans until the saw a mature follicle. My scans were on CD10 and CD14.

But when the Dr was just talking us through the IUI he said 3 scans is usually the minimum.

Day 1 of your flow - to check for cysts, then depending on when you start stims - 3 days after last pill, then he decides if he wants me to come more. In December I had 4 scans. This month only 1.

I only have 1. usually on CD11 or 12 to see when to give myself the trigger shot (at home)
I feel like it would be nice to get another scan early, because I sometimes have had pain in my ovary right after AF shows up, could be a cyst?

I only ended up having the one scan... I was suppose to have 2. One on CD3 (when I went in for blood work) and my 2nd on CD13. But I got sick and had to switch my appt to CD14, then ended up ovulating, so they just did the IUI instead with no scan.

Next cycle though- I'd need 2 scans to see how my follicles reacted after the Clomid.

Best of luck hun!!!

I had a scan on day 3 to check my antral follicle count. Then I started menopur on Day 3 (monday) and by day 7 (friday) I had another scan with an almost mature follicle. Then I had another scan that next monday, and triggered that night. I did the trigger by myself.

The cycle before I was doing femara, and they checked me about 5 times because I never did grow a follicle.

My doctor is under the impression that you do it as often as necessary. I agree. I don't pay for all my scans seperately either, they're all included in the cycle price.

On my first cycle I had two only because at the first one they weren't mature enough. That was on cd12 and then again at cd17. This time I had a scan a cd15 and my IUI the next day.

Wow..thank you all for your replies..it has been very helpful. It seems it will depend on how the follicles are developing. I really hope I don't have to have a scan during AF but obviously I will do what I need to do. For those of you who have had these scans, how bad was it? I'm sure they do it all the time, and I've had a lot of internal scans in the past to monitor a cyst I have, but the thought of being on AF makes it worse.. thanks again for your help. Good luck to everyone!

my specialist only monitors day 14 with an ultrasound--- for my course of treatment. they had other options on other tracks., but this was what he chose for me.

I don't think you will have a scan while on AF. The earliest I have heard of them doing a scan is on cd7. The scan isn't bad at all. Mine always take about 10 mins. It's a lot better then a pap smear. Just relax and don't stress. Good luck!

My baseline scan is ALWAYS on AF, lol. They do it on Day 3, I'm pretty sure most RE's do that? It's to check where everything is at before your hormones take over.

It's really not that bad. Like you said, they're used to it. The first time bothered me a bit, but after that it was easy.

In medicated cycles, I always had baseline scans on CD2 or 3 to check for cysts. If there was a functional cyst (meaning that it affects your estrogen levels) they wouldn't use fertility medication that cycle.

The scan wasn't any different b/c it was during AF. After all, you don't ever have to look at or touch the wand. I always felt a little bad for the tech, but it's part of the job and there's no avoiding it (and obviously they are not going to touch it after it's touched you, no matter what time of the month it is). Just remember to take out your tampon beforehand!

Then I would have my next scan at D12 usually, and maybe again the next day or the following day, depending on how the follies looked. If you sometimes ovulate earlier in the cycle, they might start monitoring a little earlier, like at D10.
