Hey guys,

I recently moved to a new house, its a three bedroom end of terrace. Only me and DF live here. We are spending about £75 a week on JUST the Electric and another £15 on gas a week (Its HOT here atm). Ive rang up the company (Npower) to check if im on the right tarrif and according to them there is only one tarrif to be on with them!.

So ive been around my house listing what uses electricity
we have 1 TV in the house
1 Games console
1 Laptop
1 Washing machine
1 mircowave - dont use it very often
1 House phone
Internet box
My phone charger (About 5 hours every two days)
and 1 Lamp in our bedroom
and then the lights....
Should this really cost this much!!

This isnt my first house and didnt pay that in two months at both my other homes.

Ive spoken to the company a few time and they have said there is nothing they can do, but seriously can people afford to pay this much on the electric?. My DF is disabled so gets disability benefits and we are really stuggling at the moment. Ive applied to change supplier but have to wait a while for it to come into action!.

We are £48-50 a month for gas(that was over winter so will reduce down to £35ish during the summer) and we are £58-63 a month for electic( that's with a tumble dryer used over winter so will hopefully reduce during the better weather too)

That's with a 3 bed bottom floor flat with 2 adults and 2 kids.

What your paying does seem like a huge amount, try switching providers and see if you get a better tarrif!

:shock:i pay £20 on each ,usually end up in credit with one/debt frm the other so just swop it over ,2bedrm ,2adults,2kids x

£75 a week on electric is WAYYYY to much, i would be asking them to investigate that hun, it cant be right

i live in a 3 bed and have much much more than you in use, as well as my drier for a couple of hours most days and i dont even use half of that

Im really struggling to pay that atm as DF is disabled. Im having to sit and rework all of my finances to pay it!. I am switching supplier but i have to wait untill 8th for it all to come on.

Ive asked them to investigate and all they say is that we are on the correct tarrif because their company only has one tarrif for everyone and there is nothing wrong with the meter .... I cant wait to be rid of this company and i will be warning all my friends and family off it too!

I work for an energy supplier and that is far too much. Advise them if they do not take the complaint seriously your go to the ombudsman/ ofgem. That should give them the kick up the arse they need to look at it:)

Also request an appliance usage chart and take as many meter reads as possible.

Is it a token meter? Might be set up to pay a debt of an old tenant still?

Hope that helps.

Thank you abernathie, i will ring them again tomorrow and do what you said.

I asked about previous tennants debt and there was none on it, it is pre-payment meter but we prefer it that way.

I'm in a four bed house, it's really big, and we pay £15 on each, each week. That's with three tvs, three laptops a pc, an American fridge freezer, about a million gadgets in the kitchen, about twelve loads of washing a week and a tumble drier always used. And two adults three kids.

We usually use most of it but had £12 left on gas this week ??

First thing to do is check your meter and see how many kilowatts you are using in a 24 hour period- ie how much does the meter move then google that and see if it's 'normal' if it is then your tariff is probably just too high and it's time to switch suppliers!

If its really high ask them to check the meter or do some tests yourself like running the meter fora time with only the fridge plugged in to see the usage. Sometimes it's a faulty old appliance that's draining heaps of energy- fridges are number one suspect!

Joy x

Check your immersion switch isn't on as well for the hot water - we done that once

That does sound really high. We live in a 3 bedroom end terrace too and I put £15 on electric and £15 on gas each week. Some weeks I put £20 on the electric as £15 just doesn't cover it, but that's the height of it. My washing machine is on every day(sometimes twice a day) Tumble drier, cooker, fridge, computer, 2 tvs etc etc. Something does sound suss xx

That seems abnormally high. We only use £7 a month electric and £10 gas on a two bed terraced large flat and always at home.

When you moved there did you ring n power stating you are new tentants they might not realise and could be old tenants bill as when we moved in our flat last month every time we topped up it was eating the money within hours after many calls we found out it was actually previous tenants debt it was taking off every time we topped up and they refunded us all the money it took off. So make sure it definitely isnt hun as that is drastically high.

No debt on either of the meters ive had them check and recheck it. I was in morrisons doing my shopping when Npower sales people stopped me to give me a little soft toy and try and sell me this new great tarrif they have ..... So after being told by the call centre they only do ONE tarrif they are trying to sell me a different one thats not suppose to exsist!!, so i gave him my piece of mind and took my teddy and one for my little brother and went home :haha:.

I did get my new electric key today from E.ON who i have been with since leaving my parents house, so when the money i have on the meter has gone (Probibly Morning) which is about £8 right now i think. We are no longer with them! YaY! Now just got to wait a little while for my gas to be switched over and i wont have to deal with flaming Npower ever again!!

Wow, that's alot!! When I first moved in with my OH we had problems with our gas & electric being drained so spoke to the company & it was previous debt I think so I can't help you with that but also they were charging a base rate as well as payg, so we switched company's. We're with e-on for electric & British gas for gas now. We switched straight away as well, speak to a different company about switching because the one your with will always stretch the truth.

We're in a two bedroom,

i have the tv for most of the day for the dog when we're at work and when we're at home in the evenings
laptop on for several hours
heat lamps for my tortoise
lights on
sometimes the pc/wii
portable dvd player through the night when i cant sleep
washing machine, i use about 3times per week
normal kitchen appliance microwave, kettle, toaster, grill, rice cooker several times per week
separate fridge and freezer etc

and we pay during the summer/spring £170-£200 and autumn/winter £270-£350 with heating

We're with southern electric, have a dual bill with argos energy plus, we get discount on each bill for paying within two weeks of the bill and earn points on every bills to spent at argos/homebase which works out about £10 or £15 per year plus you get 10% off on anything you buy if you load your money onto the card. you can get this with a few other companies too.

oh by the way, i was with Npower a few years back and they charged us high amounts for a 1 bedroom flat but i thought it was because i had the heating on loads but they said it was all correct then a year after we moved i got a refund of nearly £300! they said there was an error on the meter or something

That sounds like a ridiculous amount!

I live in a 2 bedroom terraced house with my OH. We spend generally between £60-80 (depending on how cold it is!) a month on gas and electricity combined. Running pretty much constantly (apart from when we're at work) are 2 computers, a tv, and 2 lots of lights. Everyday or every other day we'll use the phone charger which is plugged in overnight. And then the oven is used for probably about half an hour a day. The fridge is (obviously) on constantly.

We do make an effort to turn everything off at the plug when it's not being used though.

& we're with British Gas.

Ive changed suppliers now :) Im back to paying what i used too :).

Thanks for all the help and advice girls xxxxx
