How much does smoking affect fertility?

To the ladies who have given up or anyone TTC and thinking of giving up - well done and keep it up. I was always adamant that when I got my bfp I would never smoke when preggers but extreme sickness (hyperemesis) and various other problems left me so stressed I didn't straight away.

The guilt I felt every time I lit up was overwhelming and even though I know all the risks it took me a few weeks of having one or two a day to stop completely.

TTC is very stressful, but those first few weeks of pregnancy (esp if you're ill/have any bleeds etc) is much more stressful and is just the worst time to try and give up.

Good luck xxxxxxxxxxx

a friend of mine who was pregnant smoked before she got pregnant, and she told the doctor that she wanted to quit, and the doctor told her, well a few doctors including her ob/gyn, that because she had smoked for so long already, to NOT quit but cut back considerably, because her going through withdrawls and what not could do just as much damage as it would if she kept smoking. I think it would depend on you, and your families history.

Has anyone else in your family smoked before/during a pregnancy? were there complications during pregnancy? was the baby premature? stuff like that.

i quit 3 months ago :yipee: i was on 30 cigerettes a day :wohoo:
If u want a baby bad enough u will quit! :)
im joining the gym tues,so next goal is lose 3 stone :)
well done on the ladies quitting! I feel 1000x better now im smoke free :yipee:

wow welldone baby hopes!

I agree, if you want a baby bad enough and whats best for your baby you will quit!

Nickij - i completely agree with you, re/ quitting before you get pregnant so as to eliminate all possible harm. Also, when considering that there's a greater chance of miscarriage, i had a chemical back in August & it does make me wonder.

A couple of my friends quit using Champix too & they found it relatively easy. From what i've read though, you can't use it when TTC - that's something i was looking at. I figured that i'd try cold turkey for a number of reasons & so far, so good.

Justone - i didn't miss one after my T tonight but i really struggled to sleep last night too. I've read that a good thing to do is carry a bottle of cold water & have a swig if you feel the need for a ciggie coming on. I haven't tried it yet but i'm keeping it in the reserve tank! I could defo do with extra support so count me in too! How long have you been TTC for? I mentioned my concerns to my Doc before Christmas & she was v supportive. She suggested doing blood tests to investigate if i have any problems & said that we'd go from there. She said that it was better to know than not. I hope contact with your Doc goes smoothly tomorrow & that you get to sleep before 5am tonight!!! x

I hope I'll be asleep before then too! I may try the water thing....
Not sure actually if my doctor will be contactable isn't it bank hol tomorrow?
Been TTc over a year now:cry:

Good luck!

Consider this: I know a smoker, she decided ttc got pregnant straight away, she is 24, she is now 13 weeks and still smoking- it makes me sick to know this. Her Doctor advised her not to stop smoking straight away!!!!!!!! because withdrawal could cause her to MC. she should have stopped by now, but she still has a few aday. luckily I dont see this person often, but I am worried for her and the baby, my husband and I have told her we will never forgive her if she hurts that baby.
so what I am saying is stop now, because if you dont, it could be much harder than you think it will!

You managed to stop with the drop of a hat before, so you can do it agian, Sending you stop smoking vibes, good luck!
