I have my dating scan tomorrow and they have told me to make sure I have a full bladder. How much water do I need to drink and when in relation to the scan (it's at 8.30am)?

Thanks ladies!

I have no advice, but would like to know the answer!
Jetset - I have my scan tomorrow at exactly the same time! How far along are you?
Goodness knows how early we're going to have to start drinking water!

A pint will make sure you have a full bladder. About half an hour before? If theyre anything like my hospital you may have to wait a while!

My hospital said a pint of fluid, not milk though.
Last time round we were at a different hospital and they said you don't need a full bladder! This hospital said that if you don't have a full enough bladder they will give you an internal scan instead...no ta. I'll be getting the water down me.

i had to drive an hour to get to my private scan at 7+4 weeks. i only drank about 500ml but silly me, started drinking at the start of the journey and by the time we were half way there i was fit to burst, and the potholes in the road REALLY didnt help. thankfully i got seen right away, and she said to me - oh my god thats your bladder, its huge you must be very uncomfortable lol.

i'd say half hour before, amount is a hard one, depends how much other fluid you've drank recently. i wouldnt have been able to drink any more than 500ml

oops just noticed your scans are at 8.30! good luck girls and hope you managed to drink the right amount x

WHOOPS pregnancy brain, you posted this morning for tomorrow i see that now, well good luck for tomorrow! x

My appointment letter said to drink a pint of fluid an hour before my appointment. I did just that, and thought i hadnt drank enough as didnt need a wee lol. Got to the hospital then started needing a wee...we waited more than half an hour over the appointment time too!

I was told two 16ounce bottles of water. I was only able to do one and a half...but it was for my 7 week scan, not the dating scan so maybe it's different?

My hospital gave really specific instruction that you had to have finished your 800ml (arrggh) at least half an hour before hand to give it time to reach the bladder.

Like most people here I tried to do it all at the last possible minute - bad idea! I have since learned from a urologist that the same amount of water drunk slowly over time can be tolerated by the bladder much more effectively than if downed in one. It is like you can "trick your bladder" in to expanding effectively if it trickles in whereas it is a shock to get lots of water in one go and the bladder then wants to empty as soon as poss.

So for my second scan I started drinking 2hrs earlier sipping every few minutes. I couldn't believe I made it through my scan without needing a wee, I wasn't even desperate when it was over! And usually I go for a wee wherever and whenever possible!

I get told 2 glasses of water one hour before. You dont need to be bursting.

I have a scan tomorrow and I was told one pint of water an hour before

My letter states 1 litre one hour before my appointment. I'm not sure I'll be able to manage all that, lol

Actually I better again... I think it might be one litre too actually

I was instructed to have one pint an hour before also but I've a weak bladder so I knew I'd be bursting during the scan if I did that so before leaving the house I had a few sips (about half an hour before) and brought a bottle with me in case I needed to top up there and then. Wasn't a problem at all, saw baby almost immediately!

When I had my scan with my 1st, I got told to drink a pint of water just before we left for the hospital x

For my first scan, just a dating scan I was told no full bladder. But that for every up and coming scan to have a full bladder

I think the problem where I live is that the scan letter is a generic one for all different scans.
My urologist thought 500ml should easily be enough for a nice full bladder and a litre was just overkill to 'make sure' as if they can't see there isn't time to allow you to top up, they have to reschedule.

I had 250ml chilled orange juice and 250ml Guava juice 1 hour before the scan and I was almost about to pee when the u/s was going on,LOL!

I am sat outside my scan place now and I literally cannot get out of the car I need a wee so much. I gotta compose myself and get in there. I am worried when they press on my tummy it's gonna come out. Sheesh, this is hard work. Am bright red from the pain onf holding it. It would be funny if it wasn't me.
