One of the lines that's helped me the most from the "What to Expect" book is that there is no general norm, there's only what's normal for you. Maddening yet comforting at the same time, hehe.
I had HORRIBLE cramps very early on, and they calmed down to the equivalent of mild AF cramps that come and go throughout the day. Mine definitely get worse at night too. Even at their worst, however, they're nowhere near as bad as the cramps that I had when I m/c'd last year.
Hard as it is, try not to worry TOO much
As long as there's no bleeding and the cramps don't have you doubled over, just think of them as your wee one's way of letting you know it's making itself a cozy little home to grow into
