As the title says really. Am thinking of getting one done in a few weeks so was just wondering how reliable they are? I don't want to go to then be told 4 weeks later that it's the opposite iykwim? I know it's never 100% but are they as reliable as 20 week ones?
TIA

No scan is ever 100% as my sonos have always told me. But the genital area finishes development at 16 weeks so should be pretty accurate by then.

I think it partly depends on the skill of the sonographer and the equipment. We did a scan at 16+3 with DD and he told us he was 100% it was a girl. We did a scan with someone else at 18 weeks and she said it was too early to tell. At 16 weeks the boy and girl parts are not obvious if you dont know what you are looking at but if someone who knows what they are doing gets a good look it should be fairly easy to tell. I think most mistakes are made when they dont get a propper look or rush it.

The place I was looking at booking does a 20 minute scan so I'm assuming that should be plenty of time to find out and have a look. I'm thinking I might just pay the extra and go a bit further though and book through babybond as that's where I had my little girl, although that was 19 weeks. They seem to have a good reputation too.
Thanks for the replies. :)

My mom's a sonographer, and she can tell boy pretty early (we found out at 14 weeks). But if she sees girl, no matter what gestation, she never says it's 100%, as boy parts can just be hiding. But 16 weeks should be fine developmentally, it'll just depend on sonographer's skill, baby's cooperation, and actual sex of baby.

The place I go has been open ten years and I don't think they've got one wrong yet and they do them from 16 weeks

I found out I was having a boy at 16 weeks and was correct. Then found out girl at 16 weeks also correct.

We had ours at 15 weeks and 5 days, it was right! :) We've had triple conformation since. Xx

Sorry another question, will one day make a difference? I went to book yesterday for exactly 16 weeks but they could only offer me the day before, I did tell them that it would only make me 15 plus 6 and they said it wouldn't be a problem. Surely a day won't matter either way?

I got mine done at 16+2 at a private place. They were pretty darn certain she's a girl. The tech who did it called in a tech with more experience just to confirm, he took one look and said "that's a girl". Then he showed me the three lines on the scan. If you get a good shot of baby and it isn't hiding the bits, they should be able to tell!! It took about 10 minutes to get a good one for me because she sits crosslegged in there. Pretty much all the time.

It took over an hour for us to find out, very awkward baby! We had to go to the shop to get something sugary, and then try again.. Got there in the end :haha: When we got the shot, it was very clear. X

Ive booked mine i will be 16+4, ive had friends that have had them and have been accurate every time.
