Had my second FS appointment yesterday. FS said they will refer for IVF in Dec/Jan as I'll have been off the pill 3 years. In the meantime they will do an HSG (investigations so far: all bloods, internal and external scans, internal exam and swabs + OH SA x 2 - everything fine.)

So tell me your experiences and tell me if you were one of the lucky ones, for whom the process itself resulted in a BFP (even FS mentioned this, although did say there was no medical explanation for it). If you got your BFP, please also tell me whether it was the actual cycle you had the HSG or how many after.

What preparation? How will I feel afterwards? Everything please ladies! :winkwink:

Does anyone know if the dye they use is harmful to these dudes? :spermy::spermy::spermy:
If I have the procedure after post-af spotting I might be cd6 or so, but I ov fairly early at cd11 - cd13 usually so wouldn't want to miss the opportunity for a 'result'.

Hi sizzles. I wrote a post in 'success stories' of ltttc it's still on there about half way down the page. If you have any questions just pm me. Good luck x

I had mine and my tubes were clear, it is painful so you might want to take some OTC pain relief before the appointment, and bring a thick pad as the dye will be leaking out after the procedure. I did not get my BFP , but I know of many who have after the HSG.:flower:

Hello :)

My HSG was painless, I had some painkillers that the dr gave me to take the morning of the HSG. They found my tubes were open and everything looked fine.

I was due to start IVF the month after my HSG, but my period never came (second cycle after HSG) I got my BFP:cloud9:

I'm not sure if it was the HSG that helped or just that it was our lucky cycle.

Something I wasnt expecting was the cycle I had my HSG was a very strange cycle I ovulated really late and AF was late, I felt really sad and felt like i was broken!

Good luck to you!

p.s.
Can you tell me whether you took the day off work for your hsg or returned to work following it?

I did mine on my lunch break a few weeks ago and was able to go back to work. It was painful during so I had to do some deep breathing to not yell! But the dr said the right tube might have been blocked and he squeezed hard and it cleared. So that was good! We shall see if I can get a natural BFP soon! One thing to note, no swimming or sex for 3-4 days after (something about risk of infection)

I went to work, I had my HSG in the morning and went directly to work after. I had warned them that I might need to take the afternoon off but I felt fine, I have more pain when AF is happening.

Hmm, I can see it won't be a bfp next cycle then as I'll be about cd7 on the day of the hsg and with no sex afterwards for 3 or 4 days I'll almost be on ov - if ov happens in the usual way that month, which I guess it may not...? Oh well, at least the pressure might be off for a month!

Thanks for your responses ladies!

I didn't take any pain relief beforehand. My tubes were clear, but it hurt more than I was anticipating. Like a previous poster, I had to do some deep breathing. I didn't get my bfp the cycle of the HSG, but I did the next cycle!

I didn't spot/leak very much stuff, or at least it didn't seem like it. It only lasted for 2 days and then I think DH and I BDed as usual (he won't BD if I'm spotting/bleeding).

Also, I went into work that day. I normally don't work Wednesday but the secretary was going to be gone, so they asked me to come in. I said I would see how I felt afterwards, but honestly I was fine. The doctor and the tech who was in there told me that I could sit on the table a while afterwards if I wanted some time to recover before getting dressed, but honestly I felt like I'd feel better once I had my clothes back on. And I did =)

I had mine done last cycle, took 3 painkillers before and it was uncomfortable but fine. I went by so quickly! Both tubes are clear but didn't get my bfp yet. I'm hoping this cycle (second cycle after hsg) will be my lucky turn.

They didn't say anything about no sex after the HSG to me, We DTD theday after (no BFP that cycle I think my body was a bit shocked.) The dr should give you an antibiotic to take for a couple of days to prevent infection.

Thanks all of you for your comments and experiences (more welcome!)

It seems very mixed from the digging I've done online. It seems many women ov late or not at all following an hsg; I won't mind if it's late as it'll buy me some time after clearing the dye from my system. At this rate it's looking like I'll be cd9 possibly, so I could do with the extra time!

I've arranged to go to work in the morning until I need to leave to make the appointment, and I shan't go back in the afternoon (duvet afternoon and DVD for me!) I received my letter through and it doesn't mention antibiotics of no sex following hsg. I guess maybe they'll advise more on the day, but I would want to leave it probably a couple of days anyway.

I really hope I'm not setting myself up for a fall; with so many positive stories I'm kind of pinning all my hopes on this!

I had an HSG after three unsuccessful cycles of clomid.

HSG was very painful to me but I neglected to take pain meds beforehand. (absolutely recommend taking something at least thirty mins before appointment)

Doctor was able to see both tubes were clear but also said that it's possible that the dye helps to clear out any minor blockages from mucus or anything else.

My doctor said for me to go home and BD right away in that very cycle. Was only able to hit my fertile window once in that period but guess what? Got my BFP that same cycle!!

We had been trying for a year and NTNP for three years prior!

For information purposes for anyone else researching hsg:

I had mine on Tuesday. I took paracetamol 45 mins before the appointment time (so probably an hour before the actual procedure). I did find it painful: the speculum part was fine, it was the other bits and bobs which were quite uncomfortable. However, I can get quite painful periods so the cramping side of things was not as bad as those - the pinching of the cervix whilst they held it in place, or something, was very weird and not a nice experience. It was all over very quickly though and I barely had any cramping following it. I have had spotting since the procedure - a lot to begin with, which I stupidly thought was the dye coming out, which happened to be the same colour as blood! (I've since learnt that it's actually clear dye) I'm guessing the dye washes the uterine lining thoroughly, which is why I had some bleeding. For the last couple of days I've had spotting more akin to the end of my period, so sort of stringy/clotty; not a great deal of it, but enough to stain my underwear if I don't have protection. I'm not sure whether to be worried, or pleased that it might be minor obstructions which have been washed out of my tubes. I'm inclined to go with the latter!

Here's hoping that a good wash was all my innards needed. Will be aiming to dtd today or tomorrow on an 'all systems go' approach to a hsg bfp!

I just wanted to update that I finally got my bfp last night after trying for 15 months! This was the cycle after my HSG so not the hsg cycle but one right after. I can't help but to think it helped in my case.

Congratulations Clearbluesky! And thanks for sharing!
