Hi Ladies,
I've got my HSG on Monday at Sheffield and I'm really scared after doing some research on the net.

Can anyone tell me the best painkillers etc to take?

I would really appreciate anyone comments

Thank you

i took neurofen before and after, It hurt a bit during the procedure whihc lasted about 10 mins, then i was ok. but try not to do anything too strenous after

it will be fine, at least you will get to know whats going on x

Thank you for your reply.

I need to know what's happening down there. I was told I PCOS when i was 15 (now 28). We have been TTC for 15 months now.

Did your HSG show anything?

yes i had a lap a few weeks before so i knew i had a blocked tube and the hsg confirmed that. So now im having ivf!
dont worry it will be fine, the quicker you know what going on the quicker you can try to dpo something about it ..

Im nervous too ACLIO, More about the full bladder than anything!! Dammit I hate all the procedures, Im such a bad patient too....Although I have to admit Im getting used to things going 'down there' now lol. To think how nervous I was about having my first smear!!

If only it was just as simple as a smear lol if we don't laugh we'd cry. I'm only just starting out with all the tests etc so I know I have more to come. THe HSG is Monday I have the internal ultra sound in march same day I see the specialist DH is giving a sample in a couple of weeks too. It all takes so long though, you'd think they'd arrange for you to have the tests etc whilst your there instead of having to wait months for the test then to get an appointment :( sorry that was my little rant lol

I thought the hsg WAS the internal scan? Oh well I know I having an internal scan i dont care what its called lol just want it over with!! It does seem to take a while bit once you've got past that stage it all seems to move a lot quicker. It only seems like yesterday DH was doing his SA and now here we are 8 weeks away from treatment!

a hsg is really nothing to worry about....i remeember being really scared too but there was hardly any pain...it was just a tiny bit of cramp when the catheter goes through the cervix....please do not worry hun just take some paracetomol b4 u go in & u will be fine...i was in & out within 10 mins! xx

Hi ACLIO

I had an HSG last year. I took paracetamol and neurofen about half an hour before. The speculum was uncomfortable, like a smear, and I can honestly say thats all I felt. I was very tense and nervous as I had read that it can be painful, but I honestly didn't feel a thing.

I could see the dye going through my tubes etc and spilling out, and it was all clear. No bleeding after, maybe just very mild period pains but nothing that I had to take anything for.

I know some people's experiences are different, but remember people only tend to say if it was a bad experience. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Hello!

I have to agree with Caline, I was very lucky that my HSG did not hurt a bit. The only part I felt was the speculum thingy going in and that was because the one she chose was too big!!! I was really nervous but took a couple of painkiller 45mins before and the nurses were so kind and explained everything as we went along. Please do not worry, it will be fine.

The internal scan is not at all painful either and actually quite interesting if you get to watch the screen too.

Good Luck. Hope you get the results you are hoping for xxx

I just had mine a month ago. I was fine. I took 4 ibuprofen about an hour before. Just let your muscles relax. I had some mild cramping (similar to menstrual cramps) a few days afterwards and some discharge, but nothing much to complain about. My radiologist said that he's only seen one person in the thousands that he's performed this on in severe pain and that person happened to have very clogged tubes, so you'll be perfectly fine.
It's not painful at all.

I'm having one next friday in Sheffield too, you'll have to let me know how it goes! I'm sure you'll be fine chick just take some high strength pain killer just in case, I know I will be lol. Thankfully it doesn't take that long and just think of all that dye cleaning out the tubes so next time an egg comes wafting along it will get to the swimmers in half the time lol! At least I hope thats what happens :winkwink:

Good luck hun xx

It really is nothing to worry about - I am going to post my journal entry that i wrote as soon as i got in so you know exactly what to expect as I had no idea and I was so frightened I was crying! I felt like an idiot when I left for making such a fuss about what was basically a glorified smear test!!

Well I'm back, tucked up in bed in my jammies with a Costa mint hot chocolate and a chocolate twist.

And actually the HSG wasn't THAT bad....

When we got there I was called through pretty much straight away. I had to get nekkid from the waist down and put on a fetching backless gown. Swit swoo....

Then I was taken into the xray suite by 2 nurses and made to sit and wait for the doctor (a lady) whilst staring at the terrifying array of machinery in front of me. One of the nurses had a comforting chat with me (some women don't feel anything. But for others, it's agony!) which reduced me to tears (which I managed to hide thankfully or I would have been mortified!)

Then doc comes in, explains what she's going to do and gets me onto the bed (head in the middle, arse hanging off the end, as per) and sets up her instruments of medievil torture and aligns the xray thingy.

Then its feet up and together, drop your knees time. Speculum in (credit where its due, she was a master with the speculum, not a single twinge) then she passes the tube in. Now I'm not going lie to you ladies, it did pinch! But it was quick and not unbearable. But it was a weird, sharp, tugging feeling. But it was 10 seconds max - although i did yelp in discomfort a couple of times! Then they inject the dye. Again, this hurts a bit. It's like sharp pmt cramps - like when youre about to get a surge of af - but again it doesn't last long, about 30 seconds. While it's going in I was watching it on the telly screen which was pretty fascinating and the good news is one of my tubes is definately not blocked - there was an immediate gush of dye through it straight to the ovary. The other one I'm not so sure but the ovary lit up. I just didn't see it go through the tube. But even so - one clear tube is good! Just hope its not the one leading to my dodgy ovary....

Am tucked in bed now with mild stomach cramps and feeling a bit giddy but generally ok. Nise, it's nothing to worry about if you get sent for one, just like a short, bad period. Apparently my reaction is as bad as it gets so there you go.

Thank you all for your support. Unlucky for me I did have some discomfort. The doctor and the nurses where excellent. As soon as I felt uncomfortable the doctor deflated the balloon slightly and got it over and done with very quickly. I would like to point out thought that I did have the same reaction when I had a coil fitted years ago. The nurses where excellent and the good new is my tubes are clear :) I'm so pleased thats something that has come back looking positive.
