HSG or CLOMID first?

My obgyn prescribe me clomid to start off first, and he wants to try that for 3 cycles before doing an hsg.... But I'm wondering if getting an hsg would be best before start clomid?

I'm debating with myself whether I should call him or not for a change of plans.. I feel like maybe he wants to put me on clomid first because it sounds like my only problems are long non-painful menstruating and not ovulating. I just can't help but feel like there is something else not right.

I think most of us did our HSG first. I wasn't too concerned about getting an HSG done because I knew I was ovulating.

I would do the HSG first. Generally speaking, most doctors only recommend doing 6 rounds of clomid. What if you do your 3 and then find out your tubes are blocked? That would only leave you with 3 more tries with clear tubes instead of 6.

I did the HSG first. If u did have a blockage, then even if the clomid makes u ovulate, you won't get pregnant as it won't reach the sperm. X

The standard protocol is the HSG first otherwise the cycles of clomid are a bust.

Will this be unmonitored clomid cycles? or will you have ultrasounds and a trigger shot?

My OB-GYN gave me Clomid and told me about the local fertility specialist if I wanted to get an HSG, since she doesn't do them herself. I did 2 months of Clomid with her (no HSG, no monitoring) before getting in with the specialist, who did the HSG and now has me on Clomid again with monitoring.

In retrospect, since it didn't work for me, I'd say I wish I'd done the HSG first. Now that I have the information about my tubes (one is blocked) and we're monitoring, it seems like a waste that we didn't do this before.

That said, lots of women get Clomid from their OB-GYN and manage to get pregnant with no other tests or intervention, and that's a heck of a lot cheaper and easier than taking the next steps.

Whichever decision you make will be fine. Since you're asking about the HSG and thinking you might want to do that first, I'd probably nudge you in that direction. I was the opposite - I was terrified of the HSG and wanted to do everything we could before resorting to that, but I'm over that now. :)

I've been considering this myself. I'm 38, & have just had all my bloods done & a U/S this morning to count my follicles. There were 8 in total. Am going to 2nd FS appt tomoro & am nervous about what will be said. In the 1st appt FS wrote a slip for the HSG saying its up to me if I want to do it- but that it can be beneficial. I wasn't overly keen, but now that I know I only had 8 follicles I feel like I HAVE to do anything that might help or speed up the process... I asked the U/S girl about it today, she said they recommend taking paracetamol b4 the HSG, but from her experience ur better off taking something stronger bcos it 'can' be quite painful for some girls.. Ill def be cracking out the paracetamol AND ibuprofen! The more pain relief the better I say!

She also said that frequently girls get pregnant 3-4 months after a HSG even if nothing sinister was found. She gave me an info sheet & it even says the same on the info sheet.

If I were you I'd def be pushing for the HSG first.

Hi Juniper,

Ask about having your AMH done instead of your follicles counted. It' is much more accurate and the results will give you a timeline on your fertility...in other words, how much time you have left to try.

Hiya, I had the bloods done a week ago for AMH, but was told by the pathology woman that AMH tests are taking 2 weeks to process currently so I'll have to wait till my next appt I guess to find out results.

Thank you ladies.. Clomid will be monitor on the basic, such as u/s, b/w to see if I'm responding and prescribing progesterone if bfp does happen. Its basically a trial. I will definitely be pushing for an hsg first.

I was suppose to start clomid during this cycle but dh and I will be out of town and wont make it back in time for the b/w appts so we haven't start yet. Besides, I'm having one of the worst menstrual in my entire life. Bedridden for 2 days so I don't think this cycle would've been a good idea.
