I've never had an HSG before, but since I had a chemical pregnancy just about a year ago to be exact, the dr deemed it unnecessary. I have one tube and ovary, the other was removed during a surgery a few years back. I am thinking of asking my dr if this cycle is a bust if he would recommend an HSG next month. Does this make sense, do tubes randomly become blocked within the year?

These might be dumb questions, but I am worried about wasting money on treatments that would be impossible to work if that were the case.

Also...I have read some women say that an HSG was terribly painful to the point where they just wanted to scream :nope: ....is this true?

Thanks in adavance!

Hi Molae06

First thing, there are no dumb questions and if your Dr thinks they are dumb what about it as long as you get answers.

I had a HSG last year, it really hurt me but have heard loads of people saying it was just uncomfortable like an ok smear test. If you have one just take some painkillers just before to dull any pain. Would also add the pain I had only lasted a few seconds so don't let it put you off. I got through it by thinking that childbirth is going to hurt a lot more and everything we go through will be worth all the pain a million times over.

Hope you get some answers soon and also a lovely bfp.

Yea, after hearing they can be painful I got really scared, especially because my first IUI hurt like hell!! I remember the pain being so bad and I just had to lay there in pain since they made me wait 20 mins before I could get up. It was my first IUI and I have heard they can be a little uncomfortable so I left dh at home but I had wished I hadn't, I could hardly drive after. Needless to say dh always comes now, but luckily its never been THAT bad again.

That first time I went home and layed in bed crying and moaning, I was litterally about to go to the hospital because I thought something was majorly wrong, but then the pain subsided a bit. The next day I was so sore, the kind of feeling you would have if you did 5000 sit ups. I could hardly walk. The next 2 were not nearly this bad just mild cramping, but man, I am terrified of ever having that pain ever again.

I hope the HSG isn't going to be this bad.

I am having a hsg done on the 7th March. I am so worried about it, read bad things. Has anyone been told about no sex before the test?

Hi Molae06 I've never had a IUI but that sounds horrid, you poor thing. Sounds much worse than my HSG. After the procedure was done I only had a bit of cramping during the rest of the day. Taking some painkillers beforehand will help.

am1989 - Try not to worry too much, remember there are lots of ladies out there that say it felt like nothing. Also I just had a lap and dye this week and fully expected lots of shoulder pain like other ladies but have had none. Shows how different experiences can be. I just looked at my HSG hospital letters and I had to book an appointment for day 8 - 10 of my cycle and they said not to have any sex (protected or unprotected) before the HSG. I would check with your doctor/hospital if that is the same for you.

Hope your HSGs aren't too bad and you both get some luck with getting a bfp soon.

Hi, i had my hsg done a couple of months ago. Yup, it was painful at the time. Not scream out loud painful but then i'm a bit shy. Didn't feel too bad afterwards, painkillers before and a large bar of chocolate straight after helped! I was worried about the pain. It was worse than a smear because it lasted longer.

I had to sign a waiver saying that i accepted the risks of having sex before the hsg. My hospital letter said no ttc (condoms were ok) before the scan, our scan was on day 27 of my cycle so there was a higher risk for me to have concieved that cycle than usual. Scans get done on day 7-12 ish don't they?
Good luck!

I actually had an HSG this morning. I read your thread hoping to find out how painful it would be. :)

I'm pleased to report that I was fine. I did tke 1000mg naproxen about an hour beforehand. It felt a lot like a Pap smear that took too long. My doctor claimed he couldn't get a good seal with the balloon and wiggled it around some. Still not painful. After I came home and had lunch, I got a little crampy and laid down for a nap.

The tech gave me a long speech beforehand about possible side effects, but she said after that they usually apply more to ladies with blockage.

I feel a bit more reassured now. I think I will go ahead with my IUI this cycle that needs to HURRY UP and start already. But ask if I don't become pregnant if maybe I should do an HSG next cycle to make sure everything is okay.

Another question, so after this cycle starts and I have an IUI (assuming I don't get pregnant), after I start bleeding and everything is "fine and dandy" even though nothing is fine and dandy when LTTTC, if I do the HSG what cycle day do they normally do those? Does it matter? And if so, do you usually not TTC that month such as take fertility meds, IUI, etc? Just wait for a new cycle?

I have to self pay everything so the dr usually tries to steer me away from things that would be becoming too spendy, maybe that's why he hasn't suggested the HSG, but I will suggest it myself.

Also, it's done in a hospital right? Not a doctors office?

Just to even out the concerns, I had an HSG last cycle and it was fine - the worst part was the speculum, but that always hurts me. It does hurt some ladies but you also have to remember those that found it painful are more likely to comment about it so try not to get too worried (I do appreciate some find it painful, I'm not trying to suggest otherwise at all, just trying to provide some comfort to those who have yet to have it). Take a painkiller an hour or so beforehand as that will just help if it is a bit painful or uncomfortable.

In answer to some of the other questions - I wasn't told anything about no sex beforehand but I didn't have sex before to ensure there was no 'stuff' hanging around for the procedure.

They told me the HSG has to be done between CD 6 and 12 and there must be no bleeding at all. This advice may change from place to place though. Not sure about meds and IUI but we certainly tried naturally the same cycle. Mine was done in a hospital.

GL!

Hsg has to be done after period has finished and it is recommended before ovulation. If you have it early in your cycle, you can then go on to ttc that month. If you have it later in your cycle it is very important that you are not pregnant. The hsg is basically a series of xrays into your tubes/uterus. If there is a baby then the x ray radtation could cause a lot of damage.
I could not get an appointment for before ovulation so took the decision to not ttc for a cycle so that we could take the test. It felt like a delay but not a wasted month because the test would help us decide on a treatment.
I had my hsg done at a hospital. My fertlity specialist was there, a radiographer and several nurses. Can't imagine many doctors surgeries would be able to do that but your doctors may be better equipped thn mine in the uk. Good luck x

If I am not being too nosey, does anyone know how much an hSG costs. My doctor charges I think $500, but then I am thinking there would also be a hospital bill if it's done in a hospital with their equipment. Not sure, anyone know?
