Hi, I wondered if anyone who has already had a HSG could give me a bit of advice?

I'm going for this next week and just wondering if there's anything I should know before I go. I've read to expect the dye to leak out for a few days after and I'm now worried about how much will come out straight away! Will I need to take a sanitary pad with me to the hospital? I don't want a big leak without being prepared!

I also read it could be a bit painful - should I take anything for the pain beforehand or just see how it goes?

Sorry if these questions are a bit silly but I just want to be prepared. Thanks. x

Yes, take a pad, or else they will give you one. It was pretty painful for me, but over very quick! The nurse said for some it doesn't hurt at all! I took 2 Ibuprofen an hour beforehand. Good luck!!

Hi Peekaboo,
I had an HSG a few months ago, and I'm having a second done tomorrow (the first was inconclusive, but that's only because of the shape of my uterus, so you shouldn't worry about that). My doctor suggests you bring a sanitary napkin (I didn't experience too much leakage after the last one, but better safe than sorry) and that you take 2 200mg ibuprofens a half hour before the procedure. That's it! It can be uncomfortable, but a lot of people don't seem to find it bad at all.
HOpe that helps!

I took 2 ibuprofen an hour before, i did take a pad but they gave me one instead. It didnt hurt me at all, and they had trouble keeping the tube in my cervix, but still had no pain. The scariest thing for me was when they got the tube in they have to tip the table so the dye flows in, felt like i was going to fall off the table head first, land in a heap on the floor with my legs in the air showing all for everyone to see...LOL!! but that didnt happen!
The dye didnt run out of me, it was just drops. And only lasted a couple of days!
main thing is to relax, hard to do prob, i know i asked all these questions before mine, and i was still nervous.

Thanks everyone, I guess it doesn't sound so bad! Am I right in thinking my husband can't come in the room? I'm assuming that he won't be able to with it being an x-ray.

I know what you mean. It would be nice to go through all this together, but I didn't think he'd be allowed in.

Hi there

You will be absolutely fine - so try not to worry too much, easier said than done I know.

I took ibuprofen about an hour beforehand and also took a pad with me but they gave me one anway. It was uncomfortable rather than painful and I had no cramping after. What's quite good is to look at the images on the screen whilst they do it as it distracts from any discomfort you may feel. I was fascinated to see my bits in action!

My husband was not allowed into exam room due to the X rays. I'm sure the staff will their best to make you comfortable and dignified (well as dignified as one can be with legs akimbo!!)

Best of luck

Definetly take something before hand. I didnt and I was cramping so bad. I have a tilted cervix so they said that might cause it to hurt more. I like my dr up until that point I told him that I didnt like him anymore. I was only in pain for one day but made DH stop and get some meds on the way home to help with the cramping. I am sure it would have been much better if I had taken something before hand. I didnt need a pad until later that night but I guess everyone is different.

Hey there

I had a similar thing done in June (with sugar water and u/s instead of dye), and I have to have an hsg in a few weeks. They just want to make sure the tube my docs opened hasn't closed again. I got a motrin about 30 mins before and it was just like mild period cramps. I know how you feel about your oh, I wish mine could go in with me. Hope it all goes well for you! :hugs:

Sorry to jump on your thread, but can anyone tell me if you can ttc the same month as having a hsg? The consultant has told me that it needs to be done early in your cycle (cd 4-10), so I was wondering if there is any problem with conceiving after the dye and everything.

Chase, yes you can ttc the same cycle. It's actually a good cycle to ttc, as it clears out some blockages that might be in the way. They do it early in the cycle to avoid damage to any possible eggs in the tubes. Hope this helps!

Good to know we can still TTC! I'm having the test on day 10 of my cycle (that's the last day it can be done I think) but hubby has to go away for a couple of days on day 12 so I'm hoping we can fill my newly flushed out tubes with lots of swimmers before he goes!!! x

Yes, I had the HSg as well. I took to extra ibuprofens an hour before. They told me it doesn't usually hurt and that it's just uncomfortable. Mine hurt alot. They pushed the dye in........then more. One fallopian tube unblocked and the other stayed blocked. They said the reason it hurt was because they were able to unblock a tube with the dye. I recently just had the other tube unblocked with a wire. I felt no pain - thanks mild sedation :) The pain from the HSG just felt like bad AF cramps - it hurt because they came on full force, but they did say it's not normally that bad. They gave me a pad and the leaking wasn't too bad. Good luck!

Thanks, its been so useful to hear everyone's experiences. x

I had an HSG last month and it really wasn't that bad for me. A little uncomfortable as my cervix is tilted too and they had a hard time finding the opening. Once they started, it was fine. They provided me with a pad, but I didn't leak bad at all. Good luck! :hugs:

I didn't feel a thing!Ok...it was uncomfortable but not painfull. 1 paracetamol 1 hr b4 and 1 nurofen 30 min b4 the procedure (you'll have some waiting time). just don't forget to take your antibiotics- you don't want to risk an infection. Fingers X-ed and Good Luck peekaboo

It wasn't bad at all for me. A little uncomfortable but nothing more. Pretty cool to see on the screen too. Didn't take too long and I had a little leakage after on the pad but def. not after 24 hours. It's worth asking if DH can come with. The worst they can say is no.
Good luck!

I am having one done in 2 weeks, my doc said it doesnt matter when they test as i have pcos and no idea when AF due.. she said they normally say after your period so they can confirm your defo not pregnant!! She told me just to take a test before the HSG..

Im really nervous too :(
Can you actually see the dye coming out of your tubes??
