I'm scheduled for an HSG on Thursday. Anyone have any advice? My DH wanted to come with me, but I couldn't get an appointment for a time he could go. Doctor said I should be okay to drive myself home after...what do you think? Hoping everything shows up clear, but who knows.

Also, I have read that the cycle of and after an HSG you might be more inclined to conceive...is this true? Hope so!

thanks in advance for your replies.

Hi There, My HSG was really just like an extended smear test which was a little more uncomfortable. They made my other half wait outside, so he couldn't even provide any practical hand holding assistance! I took the rest of the day off work and just went home and relaxed. it doesn't really hurt, but just pretty uncomfortable for the time they're doing it.
I'v read that it might improve your chances too, didn't happen to me though....I think the science behind it is that if there is a slight blockage anywhere in your tubes sometimes the dye going in can clear it.
Good luck!

Hey,

Yep it's not too bad, take some painkillers & do some good breaths & you'll be fine.

If there is any debris it should be cleared by the dye & depending on your fertility issue you could be more fertile. I came home & had a lovely hot bath, AF cramps but not too bad :hugs:

I went for my HSG alone, and directly went back to work after that. I felt perfectly fine, like someone pointed out it just feels like an extended pap, and its cool to see the dye flowing through your tubes.
I did take a painkiller an hour before the procedure. And do wear a liner, the dye that comes out after the HSG isn't pretty.
I have heard some people cramp afterwards, I was fine.

Thank you all for your replies. I appreciate any advice I can get in life and especially when it come to this fertility stuff!

I decided to take the day off of work, since if nothing else I can turn it into something enjoyable and go out to lunch with DH afterwards. My issue is NOT blocked tubes as I've been able to get pregnant frequently - just can't hold onto the pregnancy - so I guess being more fertile afterwards probably won't be the case for me. Bummer!

For me it's more a concern of uterine scarring - Asherman's Syndrone - from the difficult delivery of the placenta after my son's birth. We'll see what comes of the test tomorrow.

Thanks again!

Hi
I had a tubal reversal and am due for this in May or June. I'm not really looking forward to it and am also worried about having an uncomfortable experience.

Hi.
Ok my experiance of a HSG was very bad actually... it was complete agony.
I have suffered 2 ruptured ectopics and the pain of the HSG was worse.
They struggled to get the catheter in and when they blew up the "balloon" it was more shocking. I was crying and squirming and was so glad when it was over.
Also as a matter of course they should offer u some antibiotics but they had none and said i would be ok. My hsg was clear and then fast forward a few yrs and i suffer 2 ectopics and lose both tubes within 6mths... i honestly think this happened due to infection from the HSG. I cannot prove it but due to everything being fine when i had it and to then suffer this fate i think i got a infection due to no antibiotics being given.
Insist on having them and if possible take 2 strong painkillers and a valium before the procedure to help you through it. Not everyone's hsg is as bad as mine but just take all precautions and best of luck. Hope its all clear and fast and painless xxx

Queen - Thank you for the advice. Honestly there is no way I would do it with out being allowed to take a valium and percoset (sp?) before hand. I've also read about the need for antibiotics before hand. I've even read about betadine (sp?) douching. When my time comes for this procedure I will be asking about and demanding all of the above. I'm so sensitive about having strange procedures done in that region. BTW I also read you going to your first IVF appointment soon. Yayayayayayayayayaya! That is so exciting and I'm very happy for you.

FYI - follow up - I had the HSG and it was not bad at all in terms of pain/length of time/etc. I took 4 Advil an hour before the procedure, and started antibiotics the day before (then continued to take them for 4 more days). I feel fine.

The procedure showed "something" on the right side of my uterus. going to the RE tomorrow morning to discuss the results and next steps with her. She was not present during the HSG. I'm anxious to hear what she thinks. Is the "something" something of concern or nothing major/ Should be keep TTC this cycle or wait for further procedures (e.g., hysteroscopy) to be performed/ I have a feeling it's scar tissue that needs to be removed from my uterus before we can TTC again, but I guess I'll hear it tomorrow and should stop speculating!
