Hi Ladies - After 3 rounds of IUI/Clomid/Trigger, am moving on to Fertility Specialist... Doc recommends a hysteroscopy surgery to make sure everything is "okay" with my uterus. Rationale is that since it is "diagnostic", will be covered by Ins., which no treatments are. That way don't move on to GF injex (@$2500 ea) without knowing if they will possibly work.

Other option is straight on to IVF... Anyone have this surgery? I have no history of any issues (endo, cysts, etc.) How painful & how hard a recovery? Doc says 2 days off work, which sounds pretty serious to me...

Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

Hello Austin - I had a Laparsocopy and Hysteroscopy last month and it really wasn't bad. Thankfully my FS got my insurance to cover but otherwise it wouldn't have and the hospital alone was something like $2500 not to say the doc etc. I know that the Lapascropy was through my bellybutton and I have 2 small insetions on my left side and one about 5-6 inches bellow my belly button. But the Hysteroscopy is vaginal and didn't have any cuts or anything. I was completley knocked out so I don't know anything about the surgery other than my FS got both my tubes to open!!!!!! He did do it on a Friday so I'd have the weekend to rest and not have to worry about coming to work etc. I did take Monday off as a precaution but to tell you the truth I could have taken off.

Wish you the best of luck and fx for that BFP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Austin,

If its a Hysteroscopy only, it's fine, I was awake for my first one which was diagnostic. It's a bit weird, but interesting as I could see my own womb on a screen! He found a polyp & endo on my cervix which was also pointed out & indicated that it was probably elsewhere.

If it's combined with a laparoscopy, then you're put to sleep & they'll recommend a few days off work. The couple of days off is due to having an anaesthetic - you're not insured to drive for 48hrs after having one.

In my own case, I had endo lasered away, my tubes checked (mine couldn't be unblocked) & the polyp removed. I felt fine the day after & went out & about with my mum. The stitches were a little sore & I had shoulder pain for a while, but not so bad as to need painkillers.

The only thing I'd say, it a hysteroscopy on its own won't check the state of your tubes. Have you ever had them checked with dye to make sure they're open/clear?

They don't need to be open for IVF, but they need to make sure you don't have something called a hydrosalpinx, which can knacker up the good work of the IVF.

It's frustrating, but it's best to have the investigations before trying IVF, as it would be worse having the IVF fail due to something that should be rectified first.

Thanks, PR... Best to you, too!!

Teapot - Thanks for the advice! I had an HSG (dye) in April before we did our 1st IUI. All fine. Did you ever experience problems with endo or polyps before, or was that a complete surprise? My understanding is that they will go in & check it out, and correct anything that needs to be corrected. Am with you on gettting all done that is possible, before trying IVF...

Best luck with your IVF!!!!

I had a hysteroscopy and to be honest, I was out like a light and when I woke up, I had a little cramping that I only took tylenol for and even though I was scheduled off for 2 days after, I could have gone back to work the next day! So try not to stress too much. I hope you get some answers.
