So DH thinks I'm insane, but I can smell our house and it's AWFUL! I know that every house has a unique smell, I love the way my parent's house smells, but usually we all can't pick up the scent of our own home because we live there. Well recently I've been able to smell my own home and I cannot stand it.

I also can't stand the smell of the chemical air fresheners and so spraying those around isn't an option and I've never been a big believer in candles. DH says there's no smell and that I'm a maniac. But I know almost everyone knows what I'm talking about and it's possible to smell your own house especially if you've been gone on vacation or something. But I smell it all the freaking time!

And get this (I promise I'm not on drugs or anything) when I eat my lunch at work, every bite of food I take that comes out of a little plastic container TASTES LIKE MY HOUSE!!! How is this possible?! My food is absorbing the smell and I hate eating food taken from my house.

Does anyone have ANY ideas on how to make this better? I've purchased two of the hepa air purifiers and those will get here later this week. I've also placed bags of activated charcoal around my house. It's driving me nuts!

lol, I know the feeling. I can smell DH when he comes home from work. He makes the whole room stink and all I can think is 'please have a shower'.

Leaving the windows open a lot can help the smell. Lots of things affect how your house smells so changing some of those could help too. Things like the laundry detergent you use and other cleaning products. If you like how your parents house smells, find out what they use.

You could try some shake n vac if you have carpets or rugs and some febreeze on your sofa and curtains.

Oh and get some fresh flowers or maybe some lavender and dry it out.

Hopefully all that will help.

I know exactly what you mean, my sense of smell is super sensitive at the moment too. I don't like the smell of my in laws house, so when my son has been there I can't stand the smell of his clothes, bag etc. Sometimes he brings back cakes that he's made there and I have to throw them in the bin cos the smell is sickening to me (even the one that was specially for my birthday and all nicely decorated). Haven't got any suggestions of how to make it better barring putting a clothes peg on your nose :haha:

I've had a really sensitive sense of smell this time too. It's awful! Everything just stinks! OH included, I hate being in a car with him & have to have a window open. My waste pipe in the kitchen has been a bit blocked recently so whenever I run the washing machine it reeks! Even when I've not used it for a couple of days the residual smell is horrible :-(
Whenever I cook I can smell dishwasher tablets & everytging tastes a bit weird.

I'm just trying to ignore it & use persuasive techniques to try & make me think I can't smell anything unusual. I'd also be grateful if anyone has any ideas other then air fresheners or leaving windows open constantly.

I do try to leave windows open, but I'm in Florida so my choices are windows open and a less smelly but really hot house, or a normal temp stinky house LOL.

I also use Tide free and clear detergent so maybe I will start using something with a fragrance to just get something new in the house.

I think the problem was moving into a new apartment. A lingering smell was in the carpet and possibly AC and now it's just permeated all the cloth surfaces in the house!

This exact thing happened to me today!!!! I just started going into each room and sniffing around because it smells so bad!!! I don't know what it is, my house has always smelled nice to me, maybe just our increased sense in smell I guess! Even my towels dont smell as they normally do. Wierd! I'm vaccuuming and frebreezing the place down!

I have lived in my house for about 6-8 weeks now. It was empty for about 6 months before we moved in. So it has that unlived in, foisty smell. I can't stand it!! It makes me gag... DH says he can't smell it. It's not so bad now, it was ALOT worse when I had MS. I would walk through the front door, catch a whiff and run for the toilet.

I have practically been staying at my parents house since we moved in. I go home to sleep, wake up get dressed then head straight over my parents (lucky they live in the next street!)

Yes my Mam and Dad think im mental for this too :-)

I smell our faucet water! I smell the garbage disposal! I smell toilet water! You are not insane!

the smell of rubbish makes me gag at the moment - a dustcart went past the other day and I thought I was going to throw up!

i know exactly what you mean when my kids come home from school i can smell it on them and it stinks! everyones house smells different do you have carpets in your house? ive found that they hold the smell the most plus curtains and sofas if you shampoo your carpet and wash your curtains your notice a massive difference x

I'm like this too, going from room to room trying to find what's causing the smell and people think I'm crazy,
My fabric softener I like for maybe 3 washes then I hate it and have to change it, and the Yankee candles that I love make me heave :(
